I'd want a strong defensive winger to go with Neal and RNH. Neal's speed and defensive ability is a real concern, even if he can regain his scoring touch. Having a strong defensive forward on the other wing goes a long way to mitigating that risk.

Nuge himself is probably the best defensive forward we have. More important is the speed aspect imo.

Okay.
I dont agree with this at all but thanks for explaining it a little.

Jones has played enough NHL games to show that he is an NHL dman now and that he has top 4 potential. The same cant be said for any of the dmen you mentioned with the possible exception of Bouchard.

Persson might be also be close to being an NHL player (because he is so much older than the rest of that group) but 1 pre-season game against AHL players is hardly enough info.
Jones is a better NHL dman than Bear right now and has more potential (yes I know one is LH and one is RH).
They are exactly the same age and Bear looks to me like a possible PP specialist who might be able to play the bottom pairing one day.
Laggesson, Samorukov and Broberg are years away from being in the NHL.

So no...Jones doesnt make the most sense to trade of the young prospects IMO.

In any event you trade Russell long before you talk about trading a player like Jones.

To each their own but... wow are you overrating Jones.

To say Jones struggled in his nhl when moved up the line up is putting it mildly.

Jones and Bear both played well in a sheltered role in the nhl for a brief stint.

Teddy Peckham looked as good as Jones did in their respective sheltered debuts. Jones "might" just end up like him where a brief decent stint is all they manage.

Obviously Jones is a much better prospect than Teddy was but my point stands. Right now all Jones has proven is that he can be a sheltered #6.

Russell, for all his warts, is a much better defenseman than Jones is or may well ever be.

And yes Jones does make the most sense to trade because we are so deep on LD it's ridiculous. Right now Jones has very little value anyways. A sweetener at best.

I agree, but Neal is a big liability. It does depend on how Tippett wants to deploy them, though, I guess. If Nuge gets light competition (assuming he wants to use Sheahan as a real shutdown guy), then it's not as big a deal.

Jones struggled when BOTH Klefbom and Russell where out, obviously, but the bold is Ridiculous.

Until Nuge blocks a shot with his face Horcoff style I have a hard time calling him a defensive forward. He's not willing to pay the price in the defensive end, and still struggles on draws. In saying that his 2 way game has come along nicely.

Good ole, Ted Peckman. Don Cherry was fan. Don't see the caparison though. Theo was a big and tough defensive d-man, Jones is a strong skating dman with modest offensive/puck moving potential.

Understand the thoughts about young guys showing well in brief auditions, but completely different player types.

Of course Jack Michaels was telling a random story instead of calling play while Neal scored.

This guy should stop doing play-by-play and go start a podcast where he can talk about anything he wants. It's impossible to follow the game if you have to listen to the radio.

GOING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, WITH A COMBINED WEIGHT OF 4600 POUNDS, IN BLUE AND ORNAGE, IT'S THE OILERS.

My point was only about how anyone can look good in their nhl audition especially when in a sheltered role.

It happens a fair bit actually.

I don't like when the oppositions cores, but man, sometimes you have no idea what happened. Michaels will just say it like he is half asleep or delivering a boring speech.

His PBP is too forced IMO

I am not over rating Jones at all. I am simply making a distinction around his usage in the NHL by Hitch and TMac.
McLellan used Jones as a bottom pairing dman which IMO made sense because he was a relative rookie NHL defender.
He thrived in that role...looked like a young Andre Sekera.
Hitch then bumped him up too quickly...he put him in the top pairing which (very predictably) was a major problem. Jones wasnt ready to play tough minutes at the NHL level. It didnt work out well at all.

Many posters on here (incorrectly) pointed to that as a reason why Jones wasnt NHL ready at all....just as you have done.
They (like yourself) were not factoring in context.

So this isnt about over rating a player...its just about understanding how and when a player is being used incorrectly.
