False. Petry is more often paired with the exploitation line (Suz), while Weber gets the Dano line and tougher matchups. The 3rd pairing more often than not plays with the KK line.

Okay, if your definition of first pairing is the one who helps the more offensive, exploitation line, is Petry on the first pairing?

Does your first pairing need to be the shutdown pairing?

Just asking, to see if there is a golden rule to follow?

Your 1st Pairing is the pair that play the most...hence the "1st" in the name...:thumbu:

A future russian legend with an old and bald Russian man.

...I really hope you're just trying to be funny, cuz Markov was the heart of our D-core for over a decade and a half and the fact that he was 10 games shy of 1,000 Regular Season Games with the Habs and they wouldn't give him a contract is a stain on this organization...

Markov wanted a ton of money, you don't just hand out enormous contracts unless you golf with Bergy in the summer.

I dont know how much he wanted, but markov was representing himself, and I think that makes it tougher to negotiate when you aren't on the same page because things can easily become personal. The only thing I sort of recall is that markov wanted a 2 year deal, and I'm not sure the habs wanted to do more than one.

That summer was an outright disaster. They lost markov, and Radulov for nothing.

To counteract this, they signed Alzner, and we know how that ended up. They also signed Mark streit who lasted about two games, and Hemsky lasted maybe 5 more than that.

From what it's worth I remember reports saying he wanted 2 years, $6M per year... how "enormous" is that? The guy was still our #1LD (#1 or #2 D overall), and we had no one to replace him in sights, especially when dealing away Segachev that same summer lol. We also had the cap space and nowhere near contenders.

Judging from his KHL play he would have been our best LD for another season before retiring. Radulov was also pretty dumb as well but he was not a "Habs". For Markov, it was a bad mistake nothing more.

Hopefully if Romanov plays near 1000 games with us he will get more respect :)

Not easy to keep the level up. Some mistakes here and there but overall he's learning well on the job. Very happy for him.

No way!!! He was worth maybe 3 million on a 1 year contract. 37 year olds who was at best an extremely sheltered PP specialist does not get money like that. Markov took it as a personal insult when MB did not immediately give him that and flew out to Russia (bad idea to represent himself).

And what do you mean KHL play being great? He didn't even get invite to Russia WC team

Never said it was great, said that he would have been our best LD for at least one more season (2017-2018). He was still better than Jordie Benn, or than Karl Alzner, Joe Morrow, Mike Reilly, rookie Victor Mete, David Schlemko, Jakub Jerabek or Mark Streit... I don't remember who made it as our best LD that season, it was a disaster. We did so much better with that money anyways. We signed Alzner for 3 more years than Markov wanted for 76% of the money, to play in the minors and never be heard again.

I still think he was worth 5m. A lot of people forget this but he was 2nd in points amongst defensemen with roughly 25 games into the season. He slowed down a bit as the season dragged on but he wasn’t a 3m defensemen.

Mountain Man and PeeKay both had 42 points and 40 points respectively with more games played and they barely surpassed Markov in production. PP specialist or not, 3m for his production was an insult when Weber and Subban were getting 7.5 m and 9m.

Needs to have a bigger role now, we need his offense.
I think he needs to be relied upon more for his outlet and transition play. He has a solid first pass and the team lacks in this area, especially the Webber - Chariot pairing.

With the way he's playing right now, I'm not sure he's ready for a bigger role.

I agree he isn’t standing out as much as he should, but bare in mind he’s playing with either Mete or Kulak which are hardly reliable partners. Personally I think he has more to give and I think that pairing him with Webber would compliment each other on the second pair.

But Weber is playing the 1st pair (more TOI and against the best players). Kulak/Mete on a 3rd pair are ok, they are playing sheltered minutes against bottom 6 forward. I agree that Romanov playing style is probably a better fit with Weber then Chiarot is but I'm just not sure he's ready for that role right now. When he will play with confident on the 3rd pair like he was playing the first 5 games, then I will be ready to put him with Weber. A thing though where I could agree is that where playing the Sens tomorrow and they don't have the firepower on there top line like the other Canadian team have.

A lot of people also forget how brutal he was in that Rangers playoff series that year. The Rangers' big strategy was soft dump into his corner and rush him, and it worked well. Weber who had an excellent series carried him and prevented that from being a disaster but Markov's weakness was exposed big time and any other partner would have been ugly. Him asking for 2 years was ridiculous, maybe Bergevin even entertains 1 year at 5 or 6 million but Markov demanded 2 at premium $ amount and then flew off as soon as that was not accepted.
