The timing of the bumping of this thread intrigues me.

The best poster on HF messaged me yesterday about this very subject.

He becomes a UFA on May 1, 2019. The last possible date for the KHL final game is April 25, 2019.

As per the working agreement with the KHL, NHL teams will not talk contract with players signed to KHL deals. However, the Bruins could have negotiations with his club as to buying out Koko's contract and then signing him.

This isn't a Carl Soderberg situation in which it will cost 300K however. The sooner you want Koko, the more it's going to cost. Starts at $1 million +, then you've got to pay the player and I imagine it's going to take a hefty signing bonus. (Soderberg got 500K to play just 6 games back in 2013).

It probably ends up being a $2.5 million investment at minimum (depending on when you would bring him over).

From a business standpoint, does that make sense to do?

Wait...I didn’t message you yesterday about this...

:(

why are we still talking about this guy?
Because he fits a need and the Bruins still own his right as far as I know. Just thinking about the lack of center depth and how everyone wants a guy in their mid-20’s to fill out the roster, I thought of Koko and how he’s doing this year. I instantly thought @Fenian24 would like an update to check on Koko.

Like @Gee Wally mentioned, it’s not happening anytime soon but it sounds like a buyout will get cheaper the closer we get to the deadline? JJ did it for Soderberg, I don’t be think it’s out of the question Koko could be brought over eventually. Pretty much the same risk/reward as Soderberg.

Ok, maybe it won’t happen this year. They persued Koko last summer though so maybe if they think the investment will payoff by giving the team a third line center they need. If I remember right they didn’t even play Soderberg the season he was brought over, so if they actually play Koko wouldn’t it be a better investment?

I disagree that he fits a need. He has never shown anything in the NHL. Maybe he's a better player now and maybe his KHL production suggests he'll produce in the NHL but we just don't know. The Bruins already have a bunch of guys who are question marks on any given night. They need more offense and most importantly they need it to be reliable and consistent. Koko is more of what they already have IMO, he doesn't solve any problems.

You’re right about not knowing what you’ll get with Koko, which is probably why he won’t be over here this year. It’s also true he never showed anything in the NHL but was playing less than 10 minutes a night bouncing from center to wing, he never got a chance.

I think if they could bring him over for nothing and just see what he can do under Cassidy it wouldn’t be a no brainer. The Bruins have no good in house options for third line center right now. If it costs over a million just to bring him over then forget it.

@Dom - OHL Do the Bruins still own his rights after this season? I’m pretty sure it’s until he’s 27 if I remember right.

Yes they still own his rights.

I also believe we will see him back in the NHL some day. I don't think it will be this year.

Probably not in Boston either.

I can't believe this guy is only 25 years old. I feel like we've been talking about him since I joined this board

We were talking about Stan Chistov when I joined. I feel very old.

I highly doubt Koko is coming over this season. Would be useful to have right now but oh well. Maybe we can convince him some day, if not I’m sure we can trade his rights

would his relationship with Butch have him possibly being receptive to coming back to Boston if they showed interest in keeping him Dom in your opinion?

Not sure I saw what others did in him but I`ll never be accused of having an acute eye for talent

I was never close enough to the pair to know what their relationship was like. And I won't pretend to.

I know a lot of people here talk about the relationship. May be better if you ask them since they appear to be.

How long do the Bruins actually hold his rights for? It says indefinite on capfriendly, same as Chudinov who is 28 now. They can't hold Europeans' NHL rights forever can they?

Bruins, Alexander Khokhlachev Have Talked About NHL Return

Bruins, Alexander Khokhlachev Have Talked About NHL Return

"Khokhlachev indicated to us originally during the year that he was interested [in returning to Boston]," Sweeney said. "He did re-sign back in Russia, so I don’t know if necessarily – we had some preliminary talks and where he’d fit."
Khokhlachev's interest in a Boston return likely comes back to the fact that Bruce Cassidy is now running the bench in Boston.

The 5-foot-10 forward had a 'great relationship' with Cassidy during his time with the P-Bruins, recording 61 goals and and totaling 171 points in 197 AHL contests. Khokhlachev undoubtedly played his best North American hockey under Cassidy in his final season with the B's organization, too, with 23 goals and 68 points in 60 AHL games in 2015-16.
It was night and day compared to Khokhlachev's relationship with then-Bruins coach Claude Julien, who relegated Khokhlachev to a bottom-six role and/or limited ice time in his nine NHL appearances, which prompted Khokhlachev to criticize his development during the opening days of Boston training camp in 2015.

This was written last summer. If Claude was still coach then I would think there’s no way he’s coming back. Under his old coach, still not likely but maybe.

Great find, thx. I was not nearly as impressed with Koko and didn`t see what others saw in him but who knows. A few years in the KHL, some maturity, ya never know
