Did he? I have no knowledge on the situation, but getting conflicting info here.

Think he's referring to Viola paying his employees during the pandemic and handing out $100 million in the 2020 offseason.

This year was a re-tool and we didn't spend as much until we know if Barkov will stay, if he does, you will see ownership green light more spending

We also have one of the wealthiest owners in the league as well who gave us a blank check to spend during Covid ;)

And that owner became so wealthy by not pissing away money. A rich owner does not mean they'll spend their own money to keep a franchise going at all. Some of the cheapest owners are ridiculously wealthy.

It was also in Gr’s interviews: we were allowed to go up to the cap, unlike other teams. Zito confirmed it as well

Edit: we are only three million below the cap. A lot of us did not appreciate that we would need a big roster due to Covid and it doesn’t seem like we missed any choice due to strict constraints, but instead efficiency/flexibility needs. (Adding a long term contract is tough with Barky and Huby coming up in 2/3 years)

So long story short: Zito pretty much confirmed in a couple interviews with our local media that we had no constraints. As my friend above said, we paid our employees in full (only the Leafs did that in Canada), quadrupled the size of our management staff (we added three or four experienced GMs), and had no constraints on signing.

There was massive disinformation that we had to cut dollars but it didn’t play out: we were told we had to get rid of Ekblad for money but that was false.

Viola is fine with spending money efficiently and with results which is what Zito is doing: they’re actually making a profit on BB&T pre Covid with concerts etc and Virtu Financial (his firm) did exceptionally well during Covid so he could weather the storm.

We switched out Matheson for Horny which was an insane hockey trade. (Heck we took on an uninsured contract this off-season in Horny)...The only thing we didn’t do was re sign Hoffman or Dadonov, and, as of now, it looks like Verh and Hornqvist replaced them .

They gotta keep winning though. that means more to him than weather.

Yeah, Barkov has won absolutely nothing on his entire career. That gotta matter at least later on his career, but maybe not yet. Is Panthers a cup contender during next five years? I give a slim chance.

Great player. Too bad they haven't been able to match their expectations over the years. Honestly shocked we haven't seen a fl tb playoff series yet.

With Barkov/Huberdeau/Ebklad/Lundell/Knight they have a damm good base for building a contender.

It will take a couple years but the potential is there

What metrics did you use for this conclusion?

My guts. Lol. It is not a what I consider as a "winning organization" such as Bruins, Penguins, Blackhawks or Lightning. There is no culture of winning. They can fabricate it right now though, but it doesn't come easy and quickly. They can pull out what Vegas did, but that was bit of a fluke.

I know I was just being a knob
But you can never predict anything in sports multiple years down the road.
Guesstimations are the best you can do.
You remember how crap PIT (90s) and CHI (2000s) were before their Cup runs?

Aren't you a Leafs fan though?

Kid has silently pushed himself through his 500th game already. Out of the spotlights, finished with average of 0,86 PPG. Shootout specialist.

He's UFA after next season. Wonder whether he stays in Miami for another stint.

Boston better go hard after him as a future Bergeron replacement.

Great player, ridiculous hands and game sense. Top 10 center in the league without a doubt. It will be really interesting where he will sign next.

Stay tuned... their new GM looks like he knows what he’s doing.
(Famous last words and all that, but) I’m confident that Barkov will sign an extension with FL.

For sure and that’s a fair comment, but

Zito seems like a smart Gm and has earned his shot for that prediction

+Since Barkov& Ekblad Florida hasn’t drafted prospects like Lundell& Knight.
For which they have been paying the price
