Kid has silently pushed himself through his 500th game already. Out of the spotlights, finished with average of 0,86 PPG. Shootout specialist.

He's UFA after next season. Wonder whether he stays in Miami for another stint.
Think it all depends on if Florida takes a step forward or a step back next year.

I’m sure Miami weather is a plus when you’re Finnish.

Looking like a promising situation team wise at the moment. However he could certainly cash in if he tested the market. Franchise Cs are almost never available, and even less so via ufa.

Stay or go, he'll likely pass all these Panthers playoff legends:
  • Radek Dvorak. 613.
  • Robert Svehla. 573.
  • Roberto Luongo. 572.
  • Olli Jokinen. 567.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau. 554.
  • Scott Mellanby. 552.
  • Paul Laus. 530.
  • Rob Niedermayer. 518.

Incredibly underrated player. If he makes it to free agency he’ll get to pick his team and give them a blank check. Probably one of the best players in the league to build a team around.

There is not that many teams, if any, with both boat loads of cap space and a promising situation to contend in a flat cap world.

Might be best to perhaps take a bridge deal back with Florida, especially if they make it to the playoffs this year.

Edit: actually I forgot that there is also Seattle.. and the ED might make some unexpected room on some teams.

FLA would have the 8th year option to outbid other free agent teams though.
Not saying he will definitely re-sign in FLA but the money is a FLA advantage imo.

I think Zito has built a decent re-tooled team, the young prospects are coming so this season and how we finish will likely be a big deciding factor for Barkov. He can re-sign with FLA as early as July with a full year left on his current deal

Why wouldn't he? He could get his own display at the arena and we all know how those look!

I hope he signs in New York. I'd kill to have him as a Ranger.

Can't wait for all the trade proposals when he doesn't re-sign on the first eligible day

Cap space matters if you have cash. We'll see how they are doing financially by next year. They are without a doubt one of the big money losers in the NHL

True, but I expect every team is going to be hurting somewhat in that department. Well except for your Leafs of course lol. And of course Seattle.

But even with a team that has boat loads of cash, I don't think even the top end contracts will come anywhere near the contracts that were given out before the flat cap. If he wants to get paid paid, its probably best to wait a few years. There is always that risk that something might happen of course, but it's up to him to do what's comfortable for himself.

We get by with tons of help/shared revenue from TOR, MON, NYR fans paying for our losses.

And this Leaf fan is happy to help, as long as it doesn't stop our team from spending where they can.

Barkov is one of those guys I just see staying with his team, similar to Crosby. A few others I see as long hauls with their team is Marner, Barzal, K Conno, Q Hughes, Aho, Rantanen.

Mismanagement has drowned FLA in the past and even with this new ownership until they realized to leave it to the "experts".

We've spent to the cap to compete but for whatever reason, this season Zito has penny pinched and re-tooled a decent hardworking team.

I agree, he seems extremely loyal and I'd add Mikko Koivu as an example of staying with one franchise nearly his entire career.
Barkov is an introverted and shy person, don't see him signing with a big market team if he is suppose to the be the GUY.

This season will dictate alot for FLAs future, if he stays, Zito can start mortgaging some future picks and prospects to add another piece or two in next two years to semi go all in.
If he doesn't stay, we will be set back another 2-3 years unless Zito can sign a free agent top 6C and bring in Lundell next year.

We also have one of the wealthiest owners in the league as well who gave us a blank check to spend during Covid ;)

Well in fairness it's COVID. They have been in the red since forever. That's why "Cap space" doesn't always mean you can spend that amount. They invested a ton of $ right before all the revenue losses.

For sure, not arguing they lose money but they get help from other teams (there's other write offs) and the arena usually makes money off concerts/shows etc up until this year.
I can't complain with Viola so far, he's spent 100 million total on Bob and others just the other year.

And now he will likely crack that wallet back open to pay our best player (Barkov) on a long term deal in around $80-90 million
