Goaltender talent is debatable, but the disparity in the 80s and earlier 90s was absurd. A quick expansion and no salary cap resulted in dynasty teams 10x better than average, and for every Roy there were 10 goaltenders who regularly had .850 stats and used the technique that is deservedly extinct today. Same for the glorified defensemen: for every Ray Bourque there were dozens of players who could barely skate and play the puck. Scoring was much easier in that era than in the post-lockout/pre-McDavid era.
With defensemen the argument is even easier. Star forwards NEVER faced defensemen who could "barely skate and play the puck." They played against first pairing elite talent like Bourque, Lidstrom, Chelios, Leetch, Pronger, MacInnis, and Stevens that were better than each and every defenseman in today's league. The only comparable defenseman in today's league is Keith.

Yes because the star players never played at home where they had last change and could get away from those defensemen?

It was mentioned on the last page that lemieuxs dominant scoring from all over the ice was better then ovi in his office. Every player in the league knows ovi is going to stand there and take that shot and they cant stop him. he is still hitting 50 goals into his 30s doing that. And let's not pretend ovi cant score from areas either. He beat blackwood from 15 ft out on a wrist shot. That shouldnt happen with a clear view of the shooter in the nhl. Rookie or crappy goalie but still.

Not to mention, the "Ovi Office" didn't even become a thing till like 2013, and even then it's kinda exaggerated how many of his goals come from there.

Crazy how Ovechkin, when he scores his 684th goal, will be 9 years younger than the late great Teemu Selanne was when he scored his final goal in the NHL. Not entering the NHL until turning 22 really hurt Selanne's legacy in the end. Selanne could've had 800+ goals himself if he was really dedicated to playing in the NHL. Instead he wasted several good years playing in europe...

Here are all of Ov's 2018 playoff goals. A pretty good representation of his scoring now days. See how few are scored from that spot. Also his office is the spot he stands on. Not anything on the left wing boards.

The only time Selanne is late is when he gets a speeding ticket.

Had Selanne entered the league at 18, he might have ended up with more career goals (probably would have), but he also might have burned out wayyyy earlier, so who the hell knows. He certainly wouldn't have scored 76 goals as a rookie, which continues to stand as one of the most "unbreakable" records in the history league. Selanne's rookie season is a big part of what makes him such a legend... how many all time greats set career highs in goals and points as rookies, then never matched those totals again, but were not considered a bust in the slightest? Maybe no one.

The biggest "what if" with Selanne isn't what if he started earlier, but rather, what if he didn't sever his achilles tendon in his second season...

Still, it's mind blowing to think Ovechkin is going to be blowing by Selanne's career goal total of 684 in just a few more games, with seemingly LOTS of gas left in the tank, while Selanne at 684 goals was pretty much running on empty. Ovechkin's greatness cannot be underscored in the slightest...

How can you guys compare Ovi and Mario? Mario played in era >~3.5 goals per game, Ovi in ~2.8 goals per game. Mario's stats today will be ~550 goals for his 915 games. Mario was extremelly talented, massive forward, but now average lvl of defense is much higher than on late 80s.
Ovi is just a machine for goal scoring. The best machine.
Sorry for bad english

A 37 year old Mario Lemieux put up 91 points in the dead puck era.

He could score in any era.

Absolutely. On a per game basis, Mario is probably the best goal-scorer in the history of the game. He was automatic on breakaways. However, Mario would have scored less had he played his career from 2005-> But he still would have been utterly dominant scorer.

And still we need to defend him (OV) against his own fans... against other fans (of him). That whatever, user kootznetzowz[whateve#] is a foul deed. He is enemy of The Great 8. By his responses.

There cannot ever exist any enemies of The greatest goals scorer in the history of NHL, in HF-boards... Why such guys bother to whine? Against their own idol?

Selänne, on the other hand... :D
