Crazy how Ovechkin, when he scores his 684th goal, will be 9 years younger than the late great Teemu Selanne was when he scored his final goal in the NHL. Not entering the NHL until turning 22 really hurt Selanne's legacy in the end. Selanne could've had 800+ goals himself if he was really dedicated to playing in the NHL. Instead he wasted several good years playing in europe...

Yeah, Jagr wasted several years as well. Same with Kovalchuk. And Mats Sundin retired much too early as well. Seems like most european greats never play to their full potential. Hope Ovechkin won't make the same mistake...

Pretty crazy that Ovechkin is considered the best goal scorer of all time, yet still hasn't surpassed Lemieux's career goal totals despite playing 200 more games than him.
Yeah but Ovechkin will be 6 years younger than Lemieux was, when he scores his 690th goal. That's why it's much more important to be durable and actually play the games, than talented and focusing more on your point per game pace when you play hockey...

Lemiux did the same production in 200 less games, who gives a shit how old he was.

Considering the era Ovechkin joined the league, and the fact that he's in his mid 30s, him averaging 50 goals per season is a really mind bending stat.

Edit: I should clarify that the average in this case is extracted by taking his regular season goals per game, and multiplying by 82.

Probably because Mario only lead the NHL in goals 3 times, whereas Ovechkin has done it 8 times (more than anyone else in history).

Even giving Mario the advantage of partial seasons, where who knows what could have happened, he only lead in goals/gp 6 times, whereas Ovechkin did it 8 times (tied for the most all time).

There's a reason that just looking at the strict goal numbers and ignoring the scoring environment doesn't tell the whole story.

Because your ability to play hockey at the NHL level usually ends somewere between 40 and 45 years old. So if you enter the NHL at 18, you could potentially play anywere between 1886 and 2296 regular season games if you're completely healthy and can avoid lockouts. But if you don't enter the NHL until you turn 22 or sit out a lot of games like Lemieux your regular season games number will drop to 1451 or even 915 like with Lemieux. So the most important factor in creating a great legacy is that you enter the NHL at an early age and stay as healthy as possible. So basically if you're just a Marleau level player you could possibly end up with 757+843=1600 points in 2296 regular season games. But if you're an Ovechkin level player you'll end up with 1394+1160=2554 points in the same 2296 regular season games.

One could argue Mario faced tougher competition however. Gretzky and Bossy in his early days. Brett Hull, Selanne, Mogilny, Bure, Jagr, and several more in his prime/late prime.

Me and my buddy who travel across the continent for sporting events were eyeing his 600 mark but ultimately decided to go for 700. Our hope is he gets it in the following patch:

Jan 31st (Sens) 17th game from now
Mar 7th (Pens) 33rd game
Mar 9th (Sabres) 34th
Mar 12th, 14th, 16th in Washington

The Sens game is a long-shot but putting it up there because of my proximity (hour away). But that 5 game skid in March for his 33-37th games from now to get 21 goals seems plausible. His current 21 goals in 35 games fits really well into that line as well.

Ya so he could play in the Olympics in 1992 for his home country. Much bigger then winning a Cup in those days for a Fin

I think that super mario is 1B when it comes to greatest player to ever lace them up. Gretzky is 1A obviously. With that being said what makes Ovechkin stand out is the era that he is doing it in. Yes it took Mario 200 less games but he also did in an era when goals were much eaiser to come by.

True, but you could also argue that Lemieux defaulted to passing a lot more than Ovechkin. Lemieux was a playmaking center after all.

Lemieux never lost a rocket to any of these players so who cares. It's the lamest excuse in the book, just listing off the guys without taking 2 minutes to look it up.
