Nothing to get excited about, Ustimenko has played 5 AHL games, Sandstrom isn't NHL ready, so Lyon gives you an insurance policy.
Given that Elliott had a .899 S% this past season (.909, .907 the previous two), I'm not sure replacing him with Lyon would be a big falloff.

Goaltending depth could be a important commodity during the 20-21 season.

Lyon has been good playing in Lehigh but will have to make good if he gets an opportunity with the Flyers.

Lyon seems to play better when he is playing consistently.

When he’s cold off the bench is when he’s not good.

Lyon also has trouble with the high shots in close to him and reading shooters at the NHL level.

Hopefully Lyon has been able to work on some of the shortcomings in his game if he wants an opportunity to stay in Philadelphia’s organization past the 20-21 season.

He looks composed in the AHL and then he gets to the NHL and it looks like the game is going a zillion miles an hour for him.

I'm not sure what other 3rd options were out there. At least maybe they won't sign a Berube this year.

The other options in the UFA market is really weak.
Lyon has a 1 year deal so it’s another season for Ustimenko and Sandstorm to develop in the minors.

The UFA market for 3rd string goalies is mostly AHL quality.

G Hammond - Buffalo
G Kinkaid - Montreal
G Gillies - Calgary
G Forsberg - Carolina
G McIntyre - New Jersey

G Coreau - NY Islanders
G Sparks - Vegas
G Berube - NY Rangers
G Condon - Tampa Bay
G Wedgewood - Tampa Bay
G Martin - Tampa bay
G Bachman - Vancouver
G Bibeau - Colorado
G Boyle - Anaheim
G Grosenick - Nashville

He was also injured when he was brought up in 2018-19, went back to the AHL and excelled in the second half.
Flyers were so desperate they were playing any goalie who could fog a mirror.

Some of those are probably better options but they could also sign before free agency and maybe wouldn't sign here anyway. If you want a good 3rd goalie you have to develop them.

Some goalies are just like that. Leighton is one of the greatest goalies in AHL history (Dude has most shutouts in league history at 50 in 500ish games!) but we know what his NHL play was.
