Best two-way forward - gamebreaker

Or best shutdown forward/short handed checking specialist

Rather first award than the boring 2nd one. 2nd one makes more sense in an era of clutch and grab and Darren Pang as goalie

Nobody should complain about Barkov winning it, he’s an unbelievable two way player

they should absolutely complain about clown shoes sportswriters trying to make it about themselves by putting MITCH MARNER OVER PATRICE BERGERON

I mean wtf. What planet are we on? I don’t think a single leafs fan would say that

this. It’s not astramonically absurd that Barkov won, he’s a phenomenal two way player that also puts up a ton of points. Don’t care how much that’s been spun in this thread. Wouldn’t have batted an eye over Bergeron winning, he’s amazing.

but, there’s no place for Marner getting votes over any of the top 3.

also, it’s not Alex. It’s Sasha or Aleksander.

The Big Smoke (unfortunately)
Tbh, even as an analytics guy, I don't hate this. He improved a lot this year.

Is he as good as Bergeron? No, but nobody is. Does Bergeron really need to win ten straight Selke's? Like, we get it.

If I had a vote, I give to to Danault, but I don't have a vote, and I don't really think this one is off the wall. Stone will get his turn.

Matter of fact, I don't think a bad defensive player has ever won the Selke in the age of analytics. It's definitely an award you get two years too late if you're a finalist a bunch of times (Kopitar, Kesler) but all of the winners since the lockout were at least good defensively at some point.

People complain about it too much.
Would settle for 5. In total. 2 Cups too!

I think Marchand and Pasta help Bergeron in the sense that he can focus more defensively than someone like Barkov who also has to carry the load offensively, but I don't think Marchand helps Bergeron defensively all that much. He has good defensive ability and is an excellent PKer, but since Julian left and he broke out offensively, he definitely cheats for offense like most high scoring wingers.
When you play with Pastrnak.... you need to think defense for you and for your right wing! One thing is sure... Pasta does not think defence at ALL! Playing with 63 and 88 helps getting points... but turnovers will come fast, at surprisingly moment in danger position and also they will cheat! Bergeron is a dawn ROCK on the positionnal play, puck pursuit and puck support, hockey IQ, defensive awareness and work ethic and best face-off center in the league!

Bergeron is amazing but I can't help but wonder what his offensive production at this stage of his career would look like if his wingers were Verhaeghe & Marchment/Duclair.

I really think you would be shocked. Bergeron has one of the best Hockey IQ in the game. Peers voted him as by par with Crosby for the toughest player to play against. He is not flashy, but he is efficient and his ability to adjust to the game is just amazing.

He was scoring around 60-65 points per season for like a decade before the Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak line was formed.

He's obviously an amazing player, and in my opinion the best defensive forward ever, but it's weird how people find all these ways of putting Barkov down meanwhile nobody's ever saying that Bergeron benefits from playing on that line while having Rask and an incredible 5v5 defender in McAvoy behind him.

I guess he's a good Canadian boy playing for a popular team so you just gotta accept it.

He was also playing under Claude Julien at the time and being deployed mostly in the defensive zone. Cassidy now deploys him like a traditional number one center with the team playing a more up tempo, attack style than Julien preferred and Bergeron still plays and executes his game like usual, just with more offensive opportunities now.

It definitely helps that they have a scorer like Pasta on the wing, but it's a symbotic relationship. Pasta needs a defensive presence and someone that can help playmake to help do what he can do. That line is deadly because all three are elite players.

No. Like I said, did not see Barkov who is a tremendous player and not saying anything wrong on him. I don't refer to players on their nationality neither the differences where they come from, language and religion. It is a team sport. Bergeron was a Selke caliber player before 73 came in. Rask is a very good keeper. Nothing wrong invoking roster.... but if you do so, pull the full picture and invoke how the Boston back end was like 50% of the time injured, Rask playing around half the game. Not pretending so, does not give a big picture of the contexte and 37 performance and could also likely be interpreted as pulling down Bergeron's game.

I don't know what being Canadien and\or playing for a popular team has to do with what I was saying, but I hear your frustration related to th above.

Bergeron -> Toews -> Kopitar -> O'Reilly -> Barkov...but he needs to prove it with an excellent playoff performance leading to a Stanley Cup victory.
