I would agree that AI isn't quite as advanced as some people think... But compared to the two that you listed it seems that Google Assistant is better than Siri or Alexa.

Not sure about Alexa but the articles seem to be talking specifically about Siri, and places Alexa a good distance ahead.

People don't actually think of these things as AI do they? Calling them AI is a misnomer at best.

To be fair that term has come to have a pretty broad meaning in our society. If you take it literally the concept of "artificial intelligence" doesn't really exist, but in practice we've taken to using the term AI for any sort of programmed computer behaviour that works in response to or free of human input.

And in that regard these things are probably about as advanced as they get... well maybe not Siri

These days the programming should have some form of machine learning also to be considered AI.

Artificial intelligence does exist, as initially described by Alan Turing. What doesn't exist, or what Turing thought was unverifiable and so meaningless, was whether machines can have consciousness. So, yes, AI does exist. What's more, no one really knows how far AI will go, but almost everyone dealing in the industry believes that it can go much, much further. The most developed AI is kept relatively quiet from the general public, by the way.

its a bit hard to prove what you cant see / is hidden from the public, except you are the one who does the hiding. i remember an interesting Quote regarding the turing test from a chess gm a while back... "when the ai becomes smart enough to pass the turing test, it will also be smart enough to fail it on purpose"
