Never been on a sports related website like that before...
i mean they have live statistics updates for crying out loud!!!....
for each player...no joke!!!. Its so effing cool!!!!.
not just after each period...on going, on-going...

They have done (kept doing) their own thing, have not cave in under pressure,
not changed their website looks, feel, everything, never made it modern, "stylish"
just solely for the mobile devices crap, like every single sports web site has done, almost anyways.
(sure it does have few features to that nature, but subtle way, not over doing it, into your face way)

Its perfect!.

Its fast, simple, easy to use, there are no advertisement bombardment, thank you!.
In its simplest way, it just is, no bright colors, no flashy stuff, it just is perfect!.

You don't even have to refresh the page, where ever you are.
And if they make a "mistake", it gets changed, corrected really fast,
no refresh needed for that either.

Not a big deal, but a bit surprised you didn't include the link in your OP. I mean, who has time to type in "theahl.com" from scratch? Also surprised the link (below) defaults to "Homepage" for a title without including "AHL" in it.
