We're almost to the point where teams are going to start clinching playoff spots (or booking tee times).

And in case you didn't know, Magic Numbers are the number of points won (or lost by other teams) that would clinch a playoff berth, and Tragic Numbers are the number of points lost (or gained by other teams) that would eliminate a team mathematically from being able to make the post-season.

And Friday night saw FOUR teams clinch playoff spots (Norfolk loses tiebreakers to everyone at 87 points, so they're all in).

Unfortunately, while Hamilton could, in theory, still get more points than current joint #8 in the West (75 points each for Chicago and Milwaukee right now, Hamilton's max is 76)... The Wolves and MilAds play each other twice more, meaning at least one of those two teams is going to get at least two points, which means that the Bulldogs are, in fact, the first team mathematically eliminated from the Calder Cup playoffs this season.

Texas has joined the post-season party, because Chicago and Milwaukee play each other twice more, meaning at least one of them will finish with fewer points than Texas, putting the Stars into the dance.

Springfield has clinched the Northeast Division title, and San Antonio has been eliminated mathematically.

Some teams' numbers may look off -- that's because in some cases the ROW tiebreaker has already been clinched for one team over another (e.g. Peoria loses the ROW tiebreaker to both Milwaukee and Rockford even if the Rivermen were to ROW out, thus a tie with either of those is already guaranteed to go against the Rivermen).

After games of 4/7/13:

EASTERN CONFERENCE:
Magic Numbers
Providence (6 Games Remaining) - CLINCHED (Also can clinch Atlantic Division with 3 points, and Eastern Conference and regular-season title with 11 points)
Springfield (6 GR) - CLINCHED (Has also clinched Northeast Division - can clinch at least #2 seed with 11 points)
Syracuse (6 GR) - CLINCHED (Also can clinch East Division with 11 points)
Binghamton (6 GR) - CLINCHED (Also can clinch first-round home ice advantage with 9 points)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (4 GR) - 4 points
Portland (7 GR) - 7 points
Connecticut (5 GR) - 10 points
----
On the Bubble
Hershey (6 GR) - 13 points
Norfolk (6 GR) - 13 points
(Both teams have a maximum of 87 points, and do not play each other in the remaining 6 games. Hershey has the edge in the ROW tiebreaker at this moment, 29-28, so if they win out in regulation or overtime, they get the spot.)

Bridgeport (6 GR) - 9 points
Albany (6 GR) - 8 points
Worcester (7 GR) - 7 points

Milwaukee also has the head-to-head tiebreaker. They have won 8 of 10 against the Wolves this season! If Chicago loses at Rockford in regulation, I think they are out. If the reverse happens, the IceHogs will be out! That big game is in Rockford tonight.

The Marlies have joined the Western Conference post-season roster, while the Phantoms have become the first Eastern Conference team mathematically eliminated... and sadly, the Rivermen have also mathematically come to the end of their rope. Abbotsford and Lake Erie are hanging by a thread, and could both be eliminated if Milwaukee even takes tonight's game to overtime. St. John's could be eliminated if they lose in regulation tonight, or if both the NorAds win tonight and either the Whale get a single point or the IceCaps lose in OT/SO.

Down the home stretch... Charlotte has clinched because while both Milwaukee and Chicago have maxes of 89, they play each other twice, which means that the worst case for Charlotte is that those teams split two OT victories, finishing all three with 88 points. In that case, the Checkers have clinched more ROW than Chicago can achieve, and thus have clinched the playoffs.

A raft of teams have bowed out of mathematical contention.

Big battle between Milwaukee and Chicago for the final slot....

Milwaukee 3 Chicago 2. Big 2 points for the Admirals, putting them back in 8th place. Milwaukee is 12-4-1 in recent games. Chicago didn't have a shot on goal during the first 15 minutes of the game. The Wolves didn't start playing until the third period.
