We didn’t have a pandemic in 2004. That’s the driving factor atm.
THE point is: Edmonton pulled the same deal that Calgary is reportedly pulling with the Heat, they did that because the AHL is so restrictive with its member clubs.... and they pulled the exact same move in August of 2004, after the NHL was locked out, because at that time Rexall Place was going to be dormant since the Oilers were locked out....

the AHL approved this bedgrudgingly after the 2004 Master Schedule had been released.... hence a potential revision from Toronto, to Edmonton.... just like in this case, Stockton, to Calgary..... Toronto had also lost their lease or were essentially kicked out of then RICOH Coliseum (now Coca Cola Coliseum) it is also why MLSE bolted St. John's to relocate their affiliate to that arena as a result of this late relocation....

it is also likely one factor as to why the AHL threatened the Oilers with revocation of their AHL Franchise later on when they constantly kept the affiliate in stasis or dormancy(there was a 5 way developmental affiliation as a result) and that got the League's ire which is why they flat out told them to pick a market, which is now Bakersfield , that's why the OKC Barons came into existence at the expense of the OKC Blazers, a successful Central League franchise, and their local ownership got so tired of their interference, they ended it after the contract expired.

Calgary has gone through now 8 markets in 37 years, if this comes to fruition, they've never stayed in a market longer than 7 years, which is the current city.

31 Thoughts: How the Dubois-Laine trade finally came together

Friedman on some negotiations between NHL teams and PHPA....
I really feel for the AHL, its team and its players. It’s a financial mess and an enormous challenge for everyone involved. Last summer, the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (which represents AHL and ECHL players) agreed to pro-rated salaries for this season. Back then, the league was talking about 56 games with 31 teams. Now we know three are out, and no one will play 56 — with the Canadian teams coming in as low as 24. Ontario has not yet given permission for Belleville or Toronto, and Stockton’s team looks like it’s headed to Calgary. One player said he was looking at the possibility of $30,000 pay for four months work, which he said he couldn’t afford to do.

The NHL teams, who recognize the importance of their prospects playing, are prepared to help out to the tune of guaranteeing at least 40 per cent if the season cannot be completed due to COVID, with the PHPA countering at 60 per cent. There were calls going on today to see where everybody stood, but, as you can imagine, there are raw/hard feelings everywhere. It’s brutal.

$30k for four months isn't that bad, if paid for the entire year But if that's the only income, ouch.
