You really believe someone who is worth that kind of money is spending millions on a CHL franchise as basically a charity case?

A lot of WNBA teams are owned by the same person who owns the local NBA team. They lose tons of money on the WNBA (and always will) but do so for good PR/community support.

Considering the NBA subsidizes the league from everything I can find, just how much of a charity act is it?

Maybe. There are a lot more people with that kind of money than you think, and so long as it doesn't lose a ton of money...

And if they buy a franchise at a fire sale price to begin with, sure. But I don't understand how someone who knows how to make money pays the highest price in a league for a franchise only to lose money.

There is a reason the prices can climb.

Depends on the team I suppose (I.e. LA's WNBA team probably does better than Connecticut's) but the pint is, nobody buys a WNBA team looking or thinking they will make money.

When I saw this thread title, I actually thought to myself that I recall a similar thread from the early days of this forum. I never would have thought it survived or have been easy to dig up after all this time.

If the OP did get involved with owning a team, I hope he's survived this past year. This would be a tough time to be involved with Canadian junior hockey.

They do some weird things when purging old posts from this site. Some forums, like the prospects forum, you can go all the way back to 2003. The team forums go back to like 2012/2013 I think. The Lounge, only 2016.

Im curious, why someone buy or create a team in junior leagues like GMHL or WSHL?

Money. If you can get a roster of 25 kids each paying $10k, that's a $250k budget. Tons of kids are desperate to play juniors. If you can just recruit well, it's a fairly easy moneymaker. Especially if you get a good deal on ice time and travel, the two biggest expenses by far.

Pride. Get to own/coach/manage a team. Doesn't matter if the league is a joke.

When they did the big software transition a few years ago, they deleted as many old threads as possible to keep from having to transfer the whole batch of data.

At that time, the decision was made to preserve certain forums which had a lot of accumulated archival "wealth" so to speak. Prospects, History, Business were three of the priorities. As you have noticed, the Lounge was the lowest priority because most of it is just pure drivel.

The team forums fell in the middle, deleting a lot of older data except for threads which were hand-chosen by the mods for their historical significance or whatever. That's why for example there are 9 threads on the Canes forum from pre-2012, including the Stanley Cup winning thread and a couple of prospect/draft related ones.

If "pure drivel" was the criteria then 99.9% of the "Trade Rumors and Free Agency Talk" forum would have been liquidated along with the Lounge, so there was clearly more to it than that.

EDIT: Holy crap this Claude Giroux-adjusted points thread in the Canes board archive is BRILLIANT.

They nuked the Trade board up to 2016, like the Lounge. In all seriousness the rationale was that the vast majority of the threads on those boards are crap that nobody wants to read twice.

 It got even better when the concept was taken to the main board.

I wonder if anyone has an archive anywhere that could be brought back in some form via the internet archive wayback machine or something.

LOL, too true

I wonder if anyone has an archive anywhere that could be brought back in some form via the internet archive wayback machine or something.

I've seen deleted HF threads resurrected on the Wayback Machine before. I messed around with it a bit today and couldn't find this specific thread but if we're lucky, it still exists on there somewhere.

A) those are owners buying major league teams, not junior franchises, and b)there is a lot of accounting going on to get those losses. Add to that the fact you have some serious dollars in there to actually make a difference in a person's income. A junior hockey franchise is not going to make a dent for a person like that.

Billionaires wont bother with junior teams but similar tactics can be used by other business owners interested in owning a junior team.

Thanks @Reaser for the link!

@tarheelhockey : "It takes a hell of a player not to be distracted, and focus on the game. Imagine playing on a line with George Clooney. At some point, Staal must be tempted to just stop and admire his situation. It's hard to set up 5-foot tap-ins when you're distracted.

Giroux probably sets Hartnell up for goals just so he can get off the ice and not look at him any more."

Some of the pages are lost but those that survive are great. Too bad you had to be a buzzkill and close the thread. :sarcasm:

It warms my heart to know this wasn't lost forever.

I only wish it had survived to see the era of Likes.

There's quite a few missing Laine/Matthews threads from the prospects section actually, which I noticed. Just cause some of those takes in those thread were astonishing.

Just you wait, Laine's going to score 80 goals this year.

and by this year, I mean calendar year.
