I'm curious if anyone knows of any such adult hockey skills development programs here in Winnipeg? I play beer league hockey but wanted to see if there were any adult skating/skills programs out there that could help me to improve my skills purely for fun and recreation. Anyone have any ideas? It seems most such programs are for young kids looking to be serious hockey players, and are insanely expensive.

yeah there is:

I played for a year as a kid and wanted to learn as an adult and started 6 weeks ago. It's great and there is a wide range of ability of players. They for the most part work with a split amongst the more skilled and less skilled players.

I love these classes and totally recommend them.

I always thought these were teeny bopper's programs. It's normal for a 21 year old who just wants to play rec to show up?

We put on a Learn to Play program specifically for adult rec players;
it covers proper skating techniques, passing, shooting, transitioning,
stopping, turning, introduction to crossovers and puck handling all in
a 5-10 week schedule. I don’t think we have anything in Winnipeg at
the moment but if you have a bunch of people that want to
participate let us know! Here is some info on setting it up:

I am looking at going as well, but I am looking at the later session.

I have to...um...do some personal work before I attempt to weeze myself through a demanding skating program.

P90x...I am going to seriously hate you and your overly chipper host.

I can skate but I need some refinement and skills upgrading.

So I looked into this, and based on what I've seen this program seems very much geared towards beginners? I may be looking for something more intermediate then that.

I called Canlan to see who it was geared towards and yeh they told me beginners who have just started or never played hockey before. At 31 I just started this year. I'm okay on skates and I say that very loosely! They told me that was what the program is geared towards but that there would be those in it that were more advanced and they split the group. I guess some people will take the program repeatedly.

What level are these classes? I consider myself to be a pretty decent hockey player but would love to improve my conditioning and brush up my skills. Not practicing for so long you find your techniques and abilities decline.

A couple of years ago when noone would step forward to coach one of my kids hockey teams I did it to keep the kids playing in our community. I'd been on skates maybe a 1/2 dozen times since junior high adn was worried about getting beat by a bunch of 10 year olds, so i enrolled in the canlan course. It was actually pretty fun. as another fellow mentioned, they split the group up by ability so don't worry about it seeming hokey.....

Hey Jet,
It is geared for beginners but if you have a few people that want to participate, message Ashley Burrill directly at [email protected] we can work out a program that suits you group.
Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for the info. If anyone around here is interested in a more intermediate class mention it here and maybe we can get a group together.
