Is Jordan Staal in decline?
ES Points (extrapolated to an 82 game season when applicable):
2007-2008: 20 in 82 games
2008-09: 39 in 82 games
09-10: 41 in 82 games
10-11:21 in 42 games (41)
11-12: 38 in 65 games (48)
12-13*: 23 in 48 games (40)
13-14: 26 in 82 games
14-15: 17 in 46 games (30)
*= first season in Carolina
Basically, in Pittsburgh and his first 48 games in Carolina, he was good for ~40 ES points a year, which is extremely good. His last two years, however, he has declined to more-or-less 30 ES points.
What is interesting is that his PP time has remained constant, despite the hope that he would receive more time in Carolina than in Pittsburgh. His production reflects this.
FWIW, he also saw very little PK time this year, As in, next to none.
What say you? Is it a combination of freak injuries and two brand new coaches/systems? Is he in decline, and are the Hurricanes doomed for the next 8 years?
While we're on this topic: E. Staal saw a dip in 8 points at ES this year, falling below at least 40 ES points for the first time in forever. He got 5 more on the PP than he did last year (still not good though). He got no shorthanded points while last year, he had 4.
Peters does not like putting the Staal brothers on the PK.
