As posted in the Duchene thread, he's comfortable in Ottawa and seems to want to sign here long term. If he does that and continues his current level of play into next year and beyond, I still think Ottawa ultimately wins the trade.

Pretty sure we'll be adding one in July!

Seriously though, I do like our prospect pool. Formenton looks like he should be a shoe in for a middle six NHL career imo and brings some much needed speed to the team.

Batherson has really impressed coming out of nowhere, while Brown put together a strong season and will join Belleville (or the big team) next year.

In The Hockey New redraft, Batherson was slotted 26th and Formenton 33rd. The only other non-1st rounder to be ranked in the 1st round was Connor Timmins (1st pick of round 2). Pretty damn good.

Dzingel is a 20 goal scorer, which is a pleasant surprise.

Despite our team overall being bad this season, Mark Stone has somehow managed to maintain a positive +/-, so that says something about how much he impacts the flow of play in our favour I think. I know it can be a misleading stat, but still, he's been great for us this season, so here's hoping good health for him in the off season and next season too.

That's it, that's all I've got that the moment.

In today's PostMedia News Papers. from Ken Warren

Winger Alex Formenton, a Senators draft pick last June, is expected to join Belleville of the American Hockey League this weekend. Formenton scored five goals and two assists in four playoff games for the London Knights, but they were swept out of the Ontario Hockey League postseason by the Owen Sound Attack. Formenton began the season in Ottawa before being sent back to the OHL, and he won a gold medal with Canada in the world junior championship at Buffalo. He still has a year of junior eligibility remaining, meaning he must be returned to the OHL again if he doesn’t crack the Senators lineup next fall.

Positivity includes: exposing our flaws to management and the fans

Possibly seeking another partner to help alleviate the financial difficulty of the team (aka Melnyk)

Best draft pick we've had in a long long time

Lebreton project moving forward

Melnyk attempting to rebuild fan trust (town hall, more things to come).

Duchene being a beast.

Crappy season but maybe it was for the best.

Matt Duchene. He's a beast and im glad we looked outside Turris for our number one center.

Ryan Dzingel. He's proved he can be a top 6 player.

Mark Stone. Just keeps producing. Continues to be injury prone though, thats a littlce concerning.

Would any of these guys be of interest if they became available? Assuming Boucher is gone of course. If so, who would you want? Feel free to go off the board of course.

1. We still have Karlsson - so there is hope we keep him
2. EK, TC and CW are actually really good at getting the puck out of our zone with control. Not impossible that next year we have someone on each pair that is proficient at controlled exits. Unbelievably important and something we struggled with when Phaneuf, Methot, Ceci, etc were the next group of D after Karlsson.
3. Brown played well to start the year and dominated in junior this year after being sent back. He's a gifted playmaker and we have a sniper in Hoffman who can finish. With Duchene, Stone, Dzingle, Ryan as well we actually have the potential for much improved scoring in the top 6.
4. While our defensive zone coverage sucks right now, it's the easiest to fix.
5. We have a really good chance at adding a very skilled player to the team via draft. If we win the Dahlin sweepstakes it changes everything.
6. Goaltending... well if we get Dahlin we should be able to score a lot of goals?

For a team at the bottom of the standings... there really are a few things to be positive about.

It's funny, I've said in the past that our miracle lockout year performance probably cost us a ton in the long run. No Karlsson, Spezza Michalek or Anderson for a large portion of the season should have meant a top 3 pick, instead we made the playoffs and the went to the second round. This team might have gone a very different direction had we drafted Barkov or McKinnon instead of Lazar. Hopfully this year will be a bit of the reverse, and in 5 years we can talk about how tanking this season set us up.
