Looking through the D, I would think the only time on a similar level to us is Philadelphia. Every other team has at least one actual top pairing defenceman. Most have two, some have three.

True, but Toronto and Pittsburgh are also pretty terrible.

Inopportune time to make this thread with two regulars out and one being sat to send a message.

Eh, Letang is great and Maatta was playing pre-surgery at a level way higher than any of our players. Toronto definitely gives us a run for our money, but I still like Rielly more than all of our D... Columbus' D looks pretty bad too, and I'm not super enamored with Dallas despite the upgrades.

That said, I still put what we're icing tonight as dead last...by far.

See, our "regulars" are 3rd pairing guys or in the minors on most teams.

NYI couldn't even find a place for Reinhart on their team and their top pairing is Leddy-Boychuk.

Schultz is a PP specialist on any playoff team in the league but he plays the most minutes on our team.

Toronto has Phaneuf, Rielly, and Gardiner, who are all better than each of our guys.

Oh absolutely, but take two supposedly top four defencemen and a steady #5 out of anyone's lineup and they'll look like hot garbage.

Sekera-Schultz
Klefbom-Nurse
Reinhart-Fayne/Gryba

Doesn't look so bad, suddenly. Definitely still bottom ten but we all knew this D core was a work in progress.

Bolded - nope. Gardiner? Really?

Reinhart had made the Islanders before they added two top 4 defencemen over his head. That's not his fault, he's 21 years old.

What point are you trying to make here? Our defence sucks? That's a fairly widely known fact.

I'm just posting the D lineups of each team in the NHL so we can evaluate and compare them.

Reinhart was outplayed by two AHL defencemen who took spots in their lineup during injuries. He came in and got embarrassed by the Caps and then sent right back down.

21 year old Rookie D not ready to face Ovechkin and Backstrom in his first ever NHL playoff game after only 9 career regular season games. More at 11.

We are still waiting on Klefbom, Nurse and Reinhart to develop. They are all highly touted first round prospects for a reason.

I'd be pleased if you could go back and bold who those 1,2,3 top pairing defencemen are. It seems that there is a lot of variance between what people define as a top pairing defenceman to me.

Not saying that I necessarily disagree with your statement, but identifying the top pairing guys always gives me grief as I'm not sure we all agree what the definition of top pairing is.

All right. I will go through and give my own ratings. I will bold them.

So I bolded the players who I feel can be considered 1st pairing guys on good teams. Playoff teams or borderline teams.
