well, whether its a hard cap or not (and it will be), how does everyone see their teams either ramping up to the minimum payroll or scaling down to the max.

im curious to know what we think the affects on each team will be ?

it depends on where the cap is at. if its anywhere over $50M, it wont affect the canucks at all. if its around $40M, we'll have to dump some expensive "role players", like brad may, marek malik and such. i really doubt the cap being anything less than that, and im sure it will be grandfathered in, so in short, it wont affect the canucks much, if at all.

Bettman has said in his proposal the cap will be between 34 and 39m with zero accounting for grandfathering. he is counting on the player rollbacks instead.

however, i dont want to turn this into a debate, so i wont sidetrack it.

to get the Canucks down to 40m, i think its going to take more than dumping May and Malik.

wow, how much rollback does bettman expect to get the rangers and red wings to come down to 39m by next season?? i think hes just asking for that so he have something to "give" back to the nhlpa later, you know, the whole negotiating thing.
if what you say is correct, i think the canucks will have to start trading away some "luxuries", such as a $2.1M offensive defensman (sopel) for example.

Here's the Canucks, using the PA's numbers, but the NHL's reductions:
Code:
Player 2004-05 Pct	Savings Total
1 Bertuzzi, Todd 7,133,333	35%	2,496,667	4,636,666
2 Naslund, Markus 5,650,000	35%	1,977,500	3,672,500
3 Jovanovski, Ed 4,750,000	30%	1,425,000	3,325,000
4 Morrison, Brendan 3,550,000	24%	852,000 2,698,000
5 Cloutier, Dan 3,050,000	24%	732,000 2,318,000
6 Ohlund, Mattias 3,000,000	24%	720,000 2,280,000
7 Sopel, Brent 2,100,000	24%	504,000 1,596,000
8 Linden, Trevor 2,000,000	24%	480,000 1,520,000
9 Salo, Sami 1,675,000	20%	335,000 1,340,000
10 Malik, Marek 1,550,000	20%	310,000 1,240,000
11 Sedin, Daniel 1,340,000	15%	201,000 1,139,000
12 Sedin, Henrik 1,340,000	15%	201,000 1,139,000
13 Allen, Bryan 1,179,750	15%	176,963 1,002,788
14 Chubarov, Artem 931,700	15%	139,755 791,945
15 May, Brad 900,000	15%	135,000 765,000
16 Cooke, Matt 750,000	0%	0 750,000
17 Ruutu, Jarkko 600,000	0%	0 600,000
18 King, Jason 575,000	0%	0 575,000
19 Brookbank, Wade 450,000	0%	0 450,000
20 Heerema, Jeff 450,000	0%	0 450,000
21 Aitken, Johnathan 400,000	0%	0 400,000
			43,374,783 10,685,884	32,688,899

The PA's end total was 32,964,835, so the NHL version is actually 275K less.

The Canucks would actually be forced to spend a couple of million to meet the $34 million floor.

The fact he went for 35% for expensive players would certainly help (its hard to be an expensive payroll without expensive players).

I'd bet Bettman would grandfather them if it was a deal breaker.

to get the Canucks down to 40m, i think its going to take more than dumping May and Malik.

24% would do it.

I wonder what teams will/can do if they are over the $38 million cap. Detroit is around 43 million with the rollback but that's without Chelios and Datsyuk.

Penguins would have to "ramp" it up by signing maybe a few players to hit the minimum requirement for the cap or whatever. The Penguins already would have to sign some RFA's and will probably hit near 28 million for the cap, add in maybe 2 or 3 veterans at about 1-3 million a year for each player and the team is sitting pretty well. I am hoping the Penguins don't have to add alot of players.

But if the cap is around 35-38 million and the minimum is about 30-35, the penguins could sign a solid 2nd line right winger or a centreman and maybe add a solid veteran presence on defense, re-sign some of the young guys at the raise they deserve (if they deserve it) then promote from within.

Hopefully we reach the minimum for the cap.
