so you think Holland is ready to make another mistake

...how would it be the same kind of mistake? What about trading for Green would make him think he was in danger of repeating the Weiss signing?

Great call on Kulikov. Here's a guy who could thrive in DC.

He's RFA so his trade value is probably directly related to what NHL GMs think about potential threat from across the ocean and going all Burmi.

He's looking for some big bucks and with cap possibly going as high as 76 million by the time we have to re-sign Holts and Kuzya, we probably can afford it.

Didn't we have a discussion on Kulikov during the season around the trade deadline? I thought everyone as in agreement he was about the same as Orlov and didn't see the reason to bring him in over Orly when all it would do is force one of them lower in the lineup.

We'd also still be missing a better "defender" on defense for him.

Brown does work hard. You are right about that.

Do you think that's all there is to it? For any Captain to lead a team? I'm trying to see if there is any commonalities for what it takes to be a "good" captain. There are some pretty young captains. Or players that were pretty young when named captain. Age doesn't seem to matter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NHL_captains_and_alternate_captains

I think the core quality of a good captain is effort, and secondly do the other players follow his lead / listen to what he says.

If not, he is just another grinder busting his hump eeking out a career in the NHL.

The kicker on the success of a captain, is his on ice success. Scoring a game 7 OT goal. Think Dale. Shutting down opposition forays one after another en route to countless victories. Think Langway.

All eventually see its true, he is the leader.

Because we're all bored:

1) Will the Caps make a trade prior to making their first selection at the 2014 NHL Draft?

Unfortunately not.

2) Who will be Washington's first selection at the 2014 NHL Draft? [Three guesses]

I don't follow the draft prospects, so I'd just be ************ if I guessed.

3) Which CHL league will Washington have the most selections from: OHL, WHL, or QMJHL?

See #2

4) Where does Tom Wilson start the 2014-2015 season? 4th line RW. I think Brouwer is traded halfway through the season and he moves up one or two lines, depending on where they decide to play Ward.

5) The Caps’ goaltending tandem at the start of the 2014-2015 season will be ________ and __________

Holtby and Grubauer, as we're too illogical to just pay a veteran backup

6) Mikhail Grabovsk – resigned? If so, how long/how much?

Yes. $4.5Mx5

7) Dustin Penner – resigned? If so, how long/how much?

No

8) Mike Green will be playing for which club at the start of the 2014-2015 season?

Caps

9) Mike Green will be playing for which club the day after the trade deadline?

Caps

10) Which of the following mostly minor-league RFAs will the Caps keep:

Schilling - gone
Schmidt - keep
Latta - keep
Deschamps - keep
Flemming - ?
LeBlanc - keep

11) Outside of resigning RFAs or UFAs that were on the roster last year, predict a UFA the Caps will sign, term and money.

Kulemin $2.25Mx2

12) The Caps top three trade targets will be?

Defenseman A, Defenseman B, Winger A

13) Predict a random trade involving a reasonably notable player that does not involve the Caps.

Panthers trade first overall pick for Evander Kane + Winnipeg's first rounder. I'm just ************ here.

You Have Been Named Special Temporary GM

This kind of belongs here.

You have just been named Special Temporary General Manager of the Washington Capitals until GMBM returns from paternity leave in mid July.

What do you do?

Draft

1st Pick - Trade away for player or target a prospect.
If trade: What do you want in return?
If target prospect: Who is your target? Are you willing to trade up to get him, and what would you give up to do so? What is your backup plan?

Rest of draft - Are you willing to trade around for what you want? Do you target BPA, certain positions or styles? Is there a region you focus on or ignore? Are there any roster players that you wish to trade away for picks? Are there any roster players you wish to acquire with picks?

Free Agency

Who of the Caps free agents do you sign?
Who do you target in free agency, and how high will you go to sign them?

Trade Market

Do you have any trades that you want to make indifferent of what happens in free agency or do you play the wait and see game?
Depending on your choice, what trades do you end up trying to make?

Reality

Probably at least 50% of the moves you intend on making will not work out. You will need three backup plans in case some of your intended moves do not come to fruition. Do you go with what you have in the pipe or acquire second choices? What are these options?

What is your opening night roster?
