Game Preview: Islanders AT Flyers

NEW YORK ISLANDERS (3-4-1) AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (6-2-1)
7PM | WELLS FARGO CENTER
WATCH: MSG+ | MSG GO | NHLTV
LISTEN: 88.7FM | 103.9FM |98.7FM

The New York Islanders picked up a point in their 3-2 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night in the first half of their back-to-back set at Wells Fargo Center, but have still gone without a win for their last four games.

Trailing 2-0 after Jakub Voracek and Kevin Hayes got the Flyers on the board in the first period, Jordan Eberle and Scott Mayfield evened the score in the second period. Following a scoreless third period, Scott Laughton delivered the overtime winner for the Flyers at 3:16.

Semyon Varlamov made 14 saves for the Islanders while Carter Hart backstopped Philadelphia to the win with his 26-save performance.

ISLANDERS NOTES:

• Eberle scored his third goal of the season to put the Islanders on the board in the second period. Eberle now has three goals and five points through eight games this season. Eberle started the game on his regular line, but finished alongside Brock Nelson and Leo Komarov, as Barry Trotz shuffled his lines, looking for - and getting - an offensive spark.

• Pelech had the primary assist on Eberle's goal and now has two assists through eight games this season.

• Nelson also assisted on Eberle's goal and thus recorded his first helper of the season. Through eight games, Nelson has three points (2G, 1A).

• Mayfield scored his first goal of the season and first point of the season through eight games.

Nick Leddy posted the primary assist on Leddy's goal. The blueliner now has four assists through eight games this season.

• Barzal also assisted on Mayfield's goal and picked up his team-high fifth assist of the season. Barzal also extended his point streak to three games with four points (1G, 3A) during that span. Through eight games this season, Barzal leads the Islanders in scoring with eight points (3G, 5A).

• The Islanders power play went 0-for-4 on the night and their penalty kill went 1-for-1. In the NHL, the Islanders extra man unit is ranked 21st overall with a conversion rate of 15.6% and their penalty kill is ranked 17th overall with a kill percentage of 78.3%.

FLYERS NOTES:

• Laughton's overtime winner was his first goal of the season. The center now has five points (1G, 4A) through nine games this season.

• Voracek scored his second goal of the season. The winger leads the Flyers in scoring with 10 points (2G, 8A) through nine games this season. With the goal, Voracek extended his point streak to six games with eight points (2G, 6A) during that stretch.

• Claude Giroux now has a three-game point streak (1G, 4A) as he earned the primary assist on Voracek's icebreaker. Through nine games this season, Philadelphia's captain is now in a three-way tie for the second-most points on the Flyers leaderboard with nine (1G, 8A).

• Kevin Hayes is also tied for the Flyers' second-most points with nine (4G, 5A) after scoring his fourth goal of the season through nine games.

• James van Riemsdyk extended his point streak to three games (2G, 2A) with a primary assist on Hayes' goal. Van Riemsdyk is tied for the Flyers in goal scoring with five tallies and has nine points through nine games.

• Hart made his sixth start of the season and improved his record to 4-2-1. The 22-year-old has a 3.33 GAA and a SV% of .900.

• The Flyers' power play went 0-for-1 and their penalty kill went 4-for-4. In the NHL, Philadelphia is ranked 11th overall on the power play (25.9%) and their PK unit sits in 25th at 74.2%.

Timashov starts on the 2nd line. He’s a hard worker. Im excited to see him. I thought he would be good with Pageau. We’ll see.

I at least like that Ebs is staying on that line. He looked the best he has in a loooong time after that change. And I rag on Eberle all the time.

Personally I would've swapped Czarnik for Cizikas to wake up the 4th line and kept one of Bellows/Wahlstrom in

No idea about Timashov.
No idea about Czarnik.

I DO have an idea about Johnston so I'll take a chance on anything that gets him out of the lineup.

Poor Pags. Saddled with the anchor.

Another yet frustrating aspect to the Pageau trade is that by giving up significant assets and cap space it took away all flexibility to put talent on his wings, so now he's just wasting away until 2 years from now when the cap opens up a bit. I'd rather have just punted the 3rd line altogether and used those picks/money to try and improve Barzal's wings.
