Suppose RNH played the full season, or past his 9 game audition this year. Therefore burning a year of his ELC. But next year the Oilers didn't think he was good enough to stay, and they sent him to junior. Would a year be burnt of his ELC, becuase he played a year before?

Yes it would.

Luca Sbisa played a season in 08 - 09, but was returned to junior after only 8 games in 09-10, but he still became an RFA this summer

Did he still burn a year off his ELC?

Yes, it is 3 years from the first year that a player plays 10+ games. Once you`ve broken that threshold, it doesn`t matter where you play in year 2, it still counts as a year towards your contract expiring.
