I think Volkov could be used on the 2nd or 3rd line as those lines could use a shooter on those lines but it wouldn't surprise me if he gets sent down. Cernak looks like he has supplanted KK although I don't think KK has been bad, just Cernak has been better and is a righty.

I think we keep 8 D, same as last year.

Which means 13 forwards. I think Volkov and Joseph are competing for a spot, even though they both appear to have earned it. To me, Joseph looks like the guy we can't live without, so I think we'll send Volkov down, but he'll play plenty of NHL games this year.

Also, we have to play Killorn on the 4th line. He's getting slower while the team around him is getting faster.

A good rock and hard place situation. Personally, if we keep 1 up, Joseph. Joseph can fit a roll from the fourth line to second line. Volkov is a waste being on anything less than the second line. Cernak in my opinion beat out Koekkoek, but we won't trade Koekkoek until TDL at latest. Cernak goes down with the assumption of that he takes over the #1 spot in Syracuse. Martel needs more time with our skating coaches and trainers. He showed flashes of good IQ and good placement, he just needs more time with our system.

If we transition to four scoring lines there might be room for Volkov. We have the center depth to make it work, but that would mean saying goodbye to the grindy-physical Paquette.

Killorn-Cirelli-Volkov

Featured a lot this game, that would be a hell of a fourth line.

4 scoring lines is great, I hate to go with this trope, but we need grit. Our fourth line needs to be energy, Cirelli and Volkov would be a waste on the fourth. Joseph has the right type of game to slot in for a role. Volkov is a specialist. I think we are better suited sending Volkov down to get as many minutes as he can. Where Joseph proved to us he is a better jack of all trades. Again, this is just how I feel, I may be completely off base.

Miller - Stamkos - Kucherov
Palat - Point - Joseph
Killorn - Cirelli - Gourde
Volkov - Paquette - Erne
Johnson on IR

Hedman - Cernak
McDonagh - Stralman
Coburn - Sergachev
Koekkoek/Girardi

Send down Conacher and Martel. Listen to trade offers on Koekkoek, Girardi and Coburn only trade if you get at least a 2nd. Let Johnson take as long as needed to recover, when healthy put back on 2nd line unless Joseph is playing too well then 3C and sit Paquette. When Callahan comes back and we are healthy is when we have a forward issue as we'd have to send one of Joseph or Volkov or look to trade Erne or Paquette. This is all based on these kids continuing to play this well all year to stay up.

Volkov might see the press box a couple times but I've seen enough to be convinced that (no pun intended) he's somewhere approximately at the same point as Point was when he made the NHL in the sense that he's going to have ups and downs during a feeling out process. He's probably not gonna get it right away but these brief, promising glimpses we are getting has me willing to be patient through expected growing pains. Once he gets it he'll be a solid contributor.

Joseph can play anywhere in the lineup. He sort of fits the grinder role, but is such a good one that he's going to complement skill players, and has plenty of skill of his own.

I think Volkov could play anywhere in the lineup too. He has a little bit of Palat in him. I think Volkov might make us a little bit better if we keep him around, but with Joseph, it's more like he made the decision for us. Sending him down makes us a worse team.

He's been a top-3 player in every pre-season game he's been in, and the best in at least a couple.

Put Joseph with Stamkos and see if he can get him shooting again. Stamkos also wouldn't continue to look for Joseph instead of shooting like he does with Kucherov.

Palat - Stamkos - Joseph
Volkov - Point - Kucherov
Miller - Cirelli - Gourde
Killorn - Paquette - Erne

Joseph plays well on the right, likes to take the defender wide them cut in on his left to shoot or pass. Palat has some chemistry with Stamkos and adds a needed defensive presence. Put Volkov with Kucherov to start to help with the language to make it a little easier. That 3rd line can still produce at a good rate especially eating up 3rd pair matchups. Killorn can produce no matter where he plays and can probably still drop 15-25-40 from there. When Johnson gets back put him at 3C and the 3rd and 4th lines are even better.

Someone floated the idea (I think it was you @DFC) of reuniting the TKO line and I actually think that may not be the worst idea now. Tonight showed me that Stamkos is still stuck in over passing habits. Your proposal of Joseph-Stamkos-Miller might just force him to shoot more and get him better suited to that mentality

Do you move Stamkos to the wing? I'm not totally against TKO, the whole "they don't have chemistry anymore" is overblown, but I don't really like Stamkos on the wing.

I like other options more

So as it looks like Joseph is making the team, which number is he going to wear? That 7 looks ugly on a forward. What did he wear in Syracuse?

That lineup looks sexy.

Yeah but is he going to keep it if he officially makes the team? Single digits on a forward are ugly unless your name is Ben Clymer
Well he wore 21 in Junior (taken by Point obv) and 10 for Canada (Miller). So not sure what he’d wear if not 7.
