A rematch of last year's NLCS begins in St. Louis....

Game 1 saw Warren Spahn twirl some magic as he managed to best Bob Gibson behind a 2 run double from the Iron Horse. Asked for comment after the game Gibson muttered "I should have put one in his ear". The Pirates get off to a hot start in the series taking the first tilt by a score of 3-1.

In Game 2, the St. Louis crowd was again stunned as hard throwing lefty Rube Waddell was bested by the Pirates Juan Marichal in another pitcher's duel. This time it was Roy Campanella striking the big blow, a 2 RBI single up the middle that staked Marichal to a 2-0 lead in the 6th. Duke Snider struck out with 2 on in the 7th in what would be the Cardinals best chance to get to Marichal and the Pirates take Game 2 by a score of 2-0 to go up 2 in this best of 7 series.

Rogers Hornsby held a players' only meeting prior to Game 3 in Pittsburgh and while it is unknown what he said, his message seemed to get through the players. The offense sparked by 2 stolen bases both resulting in runs by King Kelly, rattled off 5 runs in the 4th inning off of starter Kevin Brown and Dizzy Dean limited the powerful Pirates to 4 hits over 7 innings. The Cardinals take a must win Game 3 by the score of 6-1 and regain some momentum in the series.

In Game 4, Willie Stargell and Pop Lloyd went back to back mashing homeruns into the rightfield stands for the 2nd time in these playoffs, but Harmon Killebrew hit a 463 foot homerun to dead centerfield to put the visiting team up 1 in the 8th. In the 9th, Paul Molitor, familiar with Bruce Sutter going back to the 1982 World Series, took a split fingered fastball in the dirt and promptly took second on a wild pitch to put the tying run in scoring position. After Gehrig was intentionally walked, Vlad Guerrero was retired on a shallow fly ball and the Cards knotted the series at 2-2 via a 4-3 final.

Game 5 saw the Cardinals return home hoping to avenge the 2 earlier losses. Gibson and Spahn were both masterful this day taking the game to the 9th inning in a scoreless tie. In the bottom of the 9th, with Buck Leonard representing the winning run on 2nd, fan favorite Red Schoendienst stroked a single to left field off of Randy Myers and the throw home was offline, resulting in a 1-0 Cardinals win and a 3-2 Cardinals series lead.

Prior to Game 6, Rube Waddell knew he would have to face a myriad of distractions, from the Pirates faithful. Indeed the Pirates held "Shiny Object Night" prior to the start of Game 6 where each fan in attendance received their choice of a laser pointer or silver pocketwatch. Seeing as how it was a night game, most chose the laser pointer with the much rarer watch selling for over $1,000 on eBay currently. Waddell struggled with command early but settled down to a line of 7 innings, 3 earned runs. The Cardinals finally got to Marichal scoring 4 runs on 6 hits including a 3 run homerun by Duke Snider. In the 9th, down a run, the Pirates had men on the corners with 1 out. Campy ripped a shot up the middle but the steady Lou Boudreau speared the ball to his left, flipped to Hornsby for one and he fired to first to nail Campy by a few steps and the Cardinals move on by a final of 4-3.

Great team TD, I felt like we had very similar squads again in terms of makeup. Well played.
