Fletcher needs to get more involved since they aren't making the playoffs. I believe they have one more call up left so use it to bring up NAK. They also need to get Morin and Talbot into some games.

It's time to face reality and start building towards the 19-20 season.

All 100% correct BUT they will beat this run into the ground for a couple of reasons, Gordonk is coaching for a job either here or elsewhere, to casual fans it appears that “awww shucks we almost made it!!”
And Fletch doesn’t seem the type to step in and say “no you’re playing x player”

Had tickets for this one 6 rows up from the ice. The results of the last two games coupled with the 5 hour drive have me trying to sell them desperately. Looking at a $200 hit:ha:

Then it’s time for Fletcher to grow a pair and do so. If Mimsy doesn’t like, fire him too. I really don’t care who coaches the last 8-10 games, it’s basically irrelevant

All that matters now is getting kids like Morin and NAK into as many games as possible.

I saw that thread bashing the Flyers management so I just wanted to say...

With all due respect, before Hextall, Flyers management was known as one of the best in the league, and this was largely based around Homer who is a true Flyer for life.

An organization that respected its players, alumni, and most importantly - fans.

Listen to the episode of Spittin Chiclets with Scottie Upshall on Feb 11, 76 min in.

“The first thing anyone ever said to me was Sami Kapanen, I walk in the room and he’s like “i played 15 years...whatever you need here you will get here, just show up”...whatever you need to be a pro and the best, the Flyers organization made sure you had it. In Nashville we were a low budget team in 03/04. I never experienced that New York Yankees feel”

He spoke highly of Jason Smith, Sami Kapanen, the city. He’s still an Eagles fan.

Both gator and Sami kap were pure heart and soul players. That was 100% leadership from the top though. Once snider passed away, or even before when he had to step away, you could see changes in how the organization functioned.

The problem with Holmgren was he threw money at problems, which stopped working once the league got stricter about enforcing the salary cap and eliminating end runs around its constraints. He's actually in a better spot where he can throw money at the organization (from the stadium rebuild to player facilities) and let his GM handle the personnel details and the salary cap.

Hextall made the right moves, just the wrong PR, if they had committed publicly and strategically to a rebuild, the "feel" would be much different than the frustration of being almost competitive.

The Flyers are positioned to make tremendous progress the next two years, but the illusion that they were just a player/magic coach from being competitive has fooled fans and made them impatient. You can't win in the NHL with a handful of players, no matter how good (see Edmonton) - you need to build a team from top to bottom. Making the playoffs a couple times simply reinforced the illusion that they were "close."

The next couple years, the Flyers will finally have depth, when players like Frost, Farabee, Ratcliffe, Hogberg, etc., arrive, both in Philly and in Allentown, we won't have to call up Varone, Knight, Alt, etc. when there are the inevitable injuries, or carry players like Weise, Weal, Lehtera and AMac to fill out the roster. Marinating second tier talent in the AHL is a GOOD thing, because when they are recalled, they won't have as many growing pains in the NHL (first tier talent usually skips the AHL altogether). Players like Bunnaman, Vorobyev, Twarynski, Friedman should earn their way to Philly, not be handed jobs - and they should have to fight off competition in LHV to earn that opportunity.

The Leafs game illustrated the problem of taking a "don't possess the puck" and "let the other team wheel and deal in the D zone" system vs. Babcock's system of possessing the puck (old Detroit style) with a bunch of guys who can wheel and deal.

Absolutely. System was badly exposed.

It's time to bite the bullet and put this playoff fantasy out of reach. Give Morin and Talbot some action. Shut down any veterans that are even the slightest bit dinged up and do some serious praying for Kaako/Hughes.

I don't know if I want a GM who's actively involved in coaching decisions and strat on a day to day basis but this is clearly a spot where Fletcher, who represents the long-term interests of the team, needs to intervene and tell Gordon who to play.

I remember Bill Parcells was in Dallas, team was out of the playoffs, and the press was asking him about playing Drew Henson. He adamantly explained that games are not development time, and that his objective every week was to play the guys who can win the game. That's what a coach does.

You can't blame Gordon for not playing Morin. That has to come from Fletcher.

Yes, Babcock is brilliant, getting Matthews, Reilly, JT, Marner and Nylander.

There are huge personnel differences that account for that as well. Gordon can’t just snap his fingers and tell the Flyers to play possession hockey & “wheel & deal” against a much faster, more skilled Toronto team.

It's not as big as you think it is. They have more talent, sure, but they were playing two No. 7-8 defensemen and Zaitsev isn't great either. Toronto definitely gives you an opportunity to score goals (as we did) if you ever get into the offensive zone. We have plenty of guys who can help you score goals once you're there, but exiting the D-zone is a systems problem and entering the O-zone is a talent one.
