I was wondering what analytics say about these situations.

Say you're up a goal with 1:30 to go and the other teams pulls it's goalie to make it 6v5. In this situation you can't shoot at will for the empty net because of icing.

Probably a dumb question but is there anything to suggest you (the defending/leading team) might be better off taking a penalty and losing a guy but being able to shoot at the empty net without icing?

I don't have a stat handy but I think it's well understood that the goal scoring rate at 5:4 is better than the rate at 6:5. I get that this doesn't directly answer your question I think it indicates that the answer is probably no. Plus what happens if they accidentally take another penalty.
