Shutdown defensemen is a defenseman who is good at playing very defensive-first game. Because these players are focused first on defending rather than attacking, their offensive statistics are not important. Shutdown defensemen are the first choice players to go against opponent first lines, they play big minutes and are always on the ice at important moments of the game like 3vs5 SH minutes or defending the score against the opponent’s empty net. Shutdown defenseman is not necessarily a stay-at-home defenseman, as most of the best shutdown defensemen are versatile and well-rounded strong players. Principal role for shutdown defensemen is to make difference against opponents best offensive players.

gavrikov is actually a really good defenseman on the blue jackets. hes david savard's new partner in crime. i was a fan of him as a prospect and hes lived up to the hype so far.

this is the GAR of defensemen who played 1000 minutes this season. hes 75th percentile primarily off of defense alone.
