Some people think @MinJerkBen upped his comedy game. I think he just hired new writers.

We make a thread about math and it ends up being a bunch of wordplay.

Math!??! I came for the food commentary....

Well, "up yours" too...jerk

Hockey season is almost here, we've exchanged the meth for math...or are on meth and think we're doing math...can you do math on meth?

There's math in Chemistry and meth is all about the Chemistry, just ask Heisenberg.

The beginning of the season is such a weird time. Teams don’t know how they’re playing yet, systems aren’t as crisp. That’s why there’s always a ton more scoring, a couple of 7-5 games, etc. Coaches haven’t gotten their teeth into their teams yet, and the teams aren’t really the teams that they’ll be the rest of the year.

Given how much of a crapshoot it is, getting all the possible points at the beginning is a huge boost. We went 4-0-1 last year in the first five, and without it our second half comeback would’ve come up short.

3-0, especially against those teams, is huge.

Just not having to dig out of a hole is SO huge. It's hard to see it when there are still 75 games ahead of us, but it's really hard to claw your way back to being over .500 when you start off several games under. Because from that point forward, you don't need to be a .500 team... you need to be a significantly OVER .500 team for months and months. It's really difficult to pull that off.

Opposite is true if we can win a few in a row out of the gate. Last year we had runs of 2-7-1 and 2-8-2 before New Year's and still made the playoffs. That's over a quarter of the schedule down the crapper and we still made it, largely because we rallied for seemingly minor wins in early October.

The fact is (and I know some people don’t like this) that these three games are just as valuable as the last three games. Checks cash just the same for the points we earn now as opposed to later. We finished hot last year and everyone talks about that (and rightly so, it was a fun ride), but that only happens because we start 4-0-1. Start 2-2-1 and last year’s second half run comes up short.

Plus, it’s against good teams. It may actually play to our advantage that we get games against good teams like Washington and Tampa out of the way early while everyone’s still finding their systems and shaking the rust off. Evens the playing field - something you’d much prefer against a Tampa than, say, an Ottawa.

Yep. Someone on the main board pointed out we had a rough first 3 games, but now we transition into a really soft rest of October if we can take advantage. In theory, if this team is really as good as it looks on paper, we could go on a run over the next couple of weeks and end up with some real security in the standings.
