"Formality" of approving Winnipeg ownership/relocation, expanded rule 48.

And
The salary cap for the 2011-12 season is also expected to be discussed at the meeting, but NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told NHL.com Monday night it's likely that no official announcement on the salary cap will be made until next week.

Daly said at the Stanley Cup Final that the cap is likely to land somewhere around $63 million. It was $59.4 million for the 2010-11 season.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a PR fiasco meaning the BoG doesn't approve it.

The vote is nothing more than a formality. There's literally nowhere else the team can go at this point. Even Daly was saying it's almost certainly going to be unanimous approval.

Even though it's only a rubber stamp, I'm guessing Cheveldayoff may have contract extensions worked out with Ladd and the other RFAs, but cannot announce them until TNSE officially owns the team and Cheveldayoff is officially the general manager.

Similarly, maybe TNSE needed the BOG to approve their name/logo, hence it hasn't been released yet. Supposedly the Thrashers website is shutting down today and there's already a "Winnipeg NHL" team listed on NHL.com. I can't imagine the name announcement being too far away, especially of all mention of the Atlanta Thrashers will soon be gone.

Still think it would be better to announce it at the draft podium. Imagine the record ratings for that one. ;)

Actually, I think that is something that would be best announced in front of a live Winnipeg audience rather than a Minnesota one.

NHL Board unanimous on Winnipeg sale, relocation

NEW YORK -- The wait is officially over. Winnipeg is back on the National Hockey League's map.

The League's Board of Governors gave its stamp of approval for the sale and relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to the group from Winnipeg at its meeting in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday. It's the first franchise relocation in the NHL since 1997, when the Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes.

True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the club from the Atlanta Spirit group for a reported $170 million and paid the NHL a $60 million relocation fee to move the team to Winnipeg, which hasn't been an NHL city since the Jets left for Phoenix after the 1995-96 season.

The still unnamed Winnipeg franchise will begin play in the Southeast Division in 2011-12 with the expectation that it will be moved to the Western Conference starting in 2012-13.

Checking the fine print at the bottom of the new winnipeg.nhl.com page, I noticed that the website was the official home of "6282980 Manitoba LP", which is not mentioned anywhere else that I could find. Any ideas what it may be?

That's the legal name for TNSE for it's purchase of the Thrashers. It was also used in their trademark of "Winnipeg Whiteout".

The plot thickens....

Does anyone know if that legal name was used for anything else?

Nothing that I can find besides the purchase and trademark. I don't know how corporate law works in Canada but it's not unusual for a company to operate under a LP for business purposes. The 6282980 Manitoba LP business address is the same as TNSE and the MTS Centre.

I guess the business board will quiet down now... for a few months anyways

Heaven forbid! It will mean a deluge of expansion/relocation threads about every conceivable city of over 100,000 in North America and several 'Bald Silly Is Evil lulz' threads.

Our only hope then will be that Matt Hulsizer decides to fax another letter....:scared:

I'm too lazy to start a new thread.

Chipman's boutique hotel officially to be built directly across from MTS Centre.

This is just the beginning of the many downtown developments that will be announced as a part of the SHED (sports/hospitality/entertainment) district. It is truly an exciting time to be in Winnipeg.

At lease 11 months in the planning and possibly longer......I am surprised this was kept a secret (the brand at least) for so long......I think it is a classic case of so much information nobody new what to believe. Same as the casino and sports bar in city place it is a 11 month old deal conceptually and the rumors would surface then die......makes you wonder what else will crop up ;)

The 5 levels of mixed use is more aggressive than I had heard? This will be huge and will cleanup the ugliest block along Portage....This is a top hotelier and uber hip....I have heard Alt which would be a big win......Germaine would be over the top but unlikely

All good news and next Tuesday we get the official announcement
