XboxS is a pretty good deal for a UHD player, I believe the new PS supports as well. I'm waiting for Scorpio but I'm not a huge fan loading up on a DVD library again.

I prefer streaming. It's not so much that they are compressed as they are not shot in native 4K, just upscaled. The Grand Tour looks amazing.

Yeah Sony screwed up.

Maybe they just didn't want to lose as much money as they did with the PS3 this generation.

Still, being a large media conglomerate, I feel like they could've had a killer all in one box with the Pro; Vue, 4k streaming, and UHD BR, which might've helped drive adoption rates and lower prices downstream.

Come to think of it, does Sony even offer a standalone 4k BR player?

Well let's not get it twisted. The ps3 had everything to do with why there is no UHD bluray support on the Ps4 pro. They let Microsoft get their foot in the door despite having wifi, bluray support, hdmi support, backward compatibility, durability (to a lesser extent, they still broke way too often) and every other feature outside of price on 360.

They're very aware of price points

I'm gonna keep plugging it as an option for the price conscious Canadian... check out Costco, and look for the Haier 65" 4k TV. Some people have complained about things like vertical banding, but Costco has a very liberal return and exchange policy. The TV is $750 before tax - buying from Costco automatically gets you a 2 year warranty - extending to 5 years was something like $50.

It won't get you HDR - but nobody will at that price at a TV anywhere near that size. If HDR is a must, this option isn't for you. If 120 Hz is a must, this option isn't for you.

I have been thrilled with mine, especially at the price. I was looking for a cheap TV to match with a radio-computer project of mine (I gutted a 1930's standup radio, and am retrofitting it with its own sound system and computer) and was planning on a 46 to 50 inch 1080p TV, but when this came along, I made the jump.

TLDR - the Haier 65" 4K TV at Costco is a dirt cheap way to get a large, 4K TV in Canada. It's not for everyone, but if it matches what you're after, it's a great deal.

Thanks but unfortunately that's not what I need out of a TV. I haven't had TV in ages (since 2010) and run everything of internet... I just use my TV as a 2nd monitor so 120 hz is important to me but size isn't really, my current TV is 40" but I am looking to move that up in the 48-55 range. I'd adore moving to OLED but that still looks a ways away for affordability. I'd also love to keep my budget around $800-$1000 but cheaper if possible. Eyeing Cyber monday as my best bet I hope.

I think if you stick with one of the big three, Samsung, Sony or LG you can't go wrong. Some people on here are having luck of other brands. Be weary of cheap displays. I have no idea what displays go for over there.

Samsung is just so hit or miss. I'd recommend Sony over them in a heartbeat. The very top of the line Samsung panels and Sony panels look great, but you don't have nearly the panel lottery with Sony as you do with Samsung.

It's a shame that Sharp isn't really in the game anymore. I just sold a 60" Sharp (too big for my GF's apartment that I'm moving into) 4K LED. Looks better than anything on the market right now.

Sharp's 65" 4K LED from last year (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sharp-6...t-4k-ultra-hd-tv-gray/4970100.p?skuId=4970100) is a GREAT buy at under $900. Wow. I just saw that price.

Picking up an open box deal on a Vizio P series 65inch on Friday. $600.00.

Seems like a solid TV for gaming, sports, and streaming. Thoughts here?

I picked up the Samsung 55" KS8000 yesterday. What a great looking picture.

Nice. I think I'm going to pick up the lower model Samsung at 55" the KU6270. Biggest difference is 240 refresh on the KS vs 120 on the KU. Annoying but it's a massive price difference.

Seems like a giant miss with Sony not having UHD support with the PS Pro when Xbox S has it especially when part of the point with Pro is to output in 4k?? There are only a few players on the market.

My guess is Sony is banking on 4K Blu-ray not taking off like regular Blu-ray did. At least, not enough to make the added cost to the system worth it. And, honestly, they're probably right. For regular folks, streaming 4K is more than enough. For me? I'm looking forward to the fidelity that 4K BRD brings, but I know I'm in a small minority.

It is actually 120 versus 60, manufacturers are calling it the "motion rate", but pretty much lying outright.

Hrm... I read that just now but they list the lowered rates for 2015 models... same on 16 models?

EDIT:
NM it does look like they are usually half advertised. Oh well it's not overly expensive and will get me through nicely to QLEDs. :D

They had one at Target today for 550 or so dollars, was a 60 inch 4k HDTV and I thought about it but decided against it.

I did a thing. I'm returning my Sony to Best Buy and replacing it with a 43" LeEco. At $350 on sale? I don't see a reason not to. The reviews on the panels have been very good.

Samsungs selling a 55" 4k quantum dot for $1800 at best buy. A 65" for $2000. They also got a 75" for 9000.

I thought you boys said that hadn't hit the market.

They definitely look oled quality imo or at least close.

There's a Samsung 55" quantum dot for $1000 at BB. What "quantum dot" means, couldn't tell you.

The 43" I ordered shipped 30 minutes after I ordered it. Should have it either tomorrow or Monday it looks like. Wow.

Hope to set it up at my place to try it out and then bring it over to my GFs where my Sony is.

The side is kind of stunning.

Yeah its the refresh (120 vs 60) and the wider color gamut for HDR 10. The picture is phenomenal though. I upgraded from a 32" Samsung LCD that was almost 8 years old. A buddy of mine picked up the KU6300 55" today. The thing has a great picture. You won't be disappointed with the 6290.

Yeah, I was wrong. I had read that Samsung was planning to launch them in 2018, but they've been out all year. I think that, maybe, what I read is that 2018 is when Samsung plans to introduce QLED displays that require no backlight. Existing QLED ("quantum dot") displays still use a backlight, like regular LED displays. The dots, themselves, can emit their own light, but I guess that they haven't worked out yet how to make them as bright as they need to be without assistance from a backlight.

There's a Samsung 55" quantum dot for $1000 at BB. What "quantum dot" means, couldn't tell you.

Quantum dots are microscopic particles that can be made to emit light of all different colors and intensities when current is applied to them. That gives them some of the advantages of OLED (ex. brightness and vivid colors) without the disadvantages (ex. lifespan and cost). They don't solve black accuracy and contrast, though, so OLEDs are still far superior in those areas, but that's due to the aforementioned reliance on backlighting. Once quantum dot technology improves to the point that backlighting assistance is no longer necessary, they should rival OLEDs in those areas, too.
