SEASON SERIES: NYI LEAD 1-0-0

The Islanders beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Jan. 5, scoring four goals on 14 shots in a comeback win. Barry Trotz said the Isles should have left in ski masks, insinuating his team stole a win in St. Louis. Robin Lehner made 29 saves in the win.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS NOTES

- The Islanders are coming off a 5-1 win over the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday evening. The Islanders scored three goals in the first 4:43 of the contest.

- The Islanders (54 points) are currently holding the second wild card berth in the Eastern Conference, one point back of the Montreal Canadiens (55 points) for the first wild card. The Isles are two points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins (56 points) for third in the Metropolitan Division.

- Anders Lee has seven points (2G, 5A) in his last six games.

- Brock Nelson scored his 16th goal of the season on Sunday, which tied Anders Lee for the team lead. Nelson's power-play goal was his first this season.

- Jordan Eberle is one goal shy of 200 in his NHL career. Eberle has three points (2G, 1A) in his last five games, including a goal against the Blues on Jan. 5.

- Devon Toews scored his third goal of the season on Sunday, tying for the lead among Islanders defensemen. Toews has four points (3G, 1A) in his first 10 NHL games. Vladimir Malakhov (1992-93) was the last Isles defenseman to score three times in his first 10 games.

- The Isles are 5-1-1 in the last seven games against the Blues and are 2-0-1 in three previous games against the Blues at Barclays Center.

- The Islanders will wear their alternate jerseys on Tuesday. They will wear them again on Jan. 20, with future dates released at the beginning of February.

ST. LOUIS BLUES NOTES

- The Blues have won three straight games heading into Tuesday's action. The three-game winning streak is the Blues' longest of the season.

- St. Louis' most recent win came on Monday night, as the Blues beat the Washington Capitals 4-1. The Blues will be playing the second night of a back-to-back set when they visit Brooklyn on Tuesday.

- The Blues (44 points) are three points back of the Minnesota Wild (47 points) for the second wild card berth and fifth in the Central Division.

- David Perron is riding an 11-game point streak. Perron has five goals and nine assists (14 points) over that span.

- Ryan O'Reilly leads St. Louis with 44 points (16G, 28A) in 44 games this season.

If anyone said at the start of the season that Flippula and Eberle would have similar production at the midpoint,I wouldn't have believed them.

Funny you mention him - I have a feeling Flip is due for one.

We will not be as sloppy as we were in St Louis 2 weeks ago. I'm sure Trotz will have the team's attention.

Gonna be interesting to see if Lou tries to extend him and what his demands are.
Flip could be tied to what happens at 2C and with Nelson. For example, if the Isles extend Nelson for reasonable $$ to be the 2C, they might want to upgrade 3C. Or, if they spend big money on a 2C, then maybe Flip sticks around. Or, or, or. :)

The last game against St. Louis is where they started to break down a bit and Trotz called them out. I’m curious to see how they will respond, especially coming off of a big win against Tampa.

Hopefully Lehner is in goal. Greiss played fantastic, but the organization needs to play Lehner like a starter and see how he handles it. This will determine how interested NYI will be in Bobrovsky this summer.

I think it's the perfect opponent coming off a huge win against the NHL's best team. Hopefully they want to right the wrong that happened last time.

I didn't realize the Blues were playing tonight so will do more updating by tomorrow.

Catching another team on the back end of a home and home. Fortuitous for us. And its in Washington, not NJ/NYR so it still involves a bit of travel.

Boychuk had an interesting take on the Isles' game on Saturday being in the afternoon. He said it made a huge difference. Didn't even feel like a back to back.

How in the hell can you even try to think about who is going to win this game? They were horrible in St. Lou last time and somehow got two points. Rangers games were mostly messes. Then we kinda rout TB when we should have gotten mangled.

So, which team shows?

Agreed. Very good point on Lehner, as that’s how I see it. Play him like a number 1, he’s earned it; see what you have in him.

Not sure of what I make of this one. NYI tends to play down to their opponents, the Blues are coming in strong.

If they play w the same intensity and sharpness from Sunday, they *should win.

These are the games you have to win consistently to keep pace. They looked great last game. All 4 lines were rolling, toews flexing his speed and skill.

The Blues got shit on in the first half, but I guarantee they'll make the playoffs. Not sex change guarantee, but close. Winners of 3 straight. 3 points out of the playoffs. They'll get in. This is no easy game at all, and not just because none of them are easy. Come out hard and set the pace quickly at home.

We need to play Lehner tonight, Greiss Thursday vs Devils and Lehner again Friday vs the Caps. Gives us a good chance to win all 3 games. Have to win tonight and Thursday for sure.
