SEASON SERIES: NYI TRAIL 0-1-0

The New York Islanders suffered a 4-2 defeat on Nov. 8 against the Tampa Bay Lightning and trail 0-1-0 in the season series. Josh Bailey netted both goals - his fourth and fifth of the season - in the road loss, but the Isles gave up the go-ahead goal with 1:26 to play in the third period.
The two remaining games in the season series will be home games for the Islanders. All three matchups this season will have been at three different arenas (Amalie Arena, Barclays Center, and NYCB LIVE/Nassau Coliseum).

ISLANDERS NOTES

- The Islanders have lost six of their last seven meetings with the Lightning. New York's last win against Tampa Bay was a 5-3 road win on Nov. 18, 2017. New York is 1-3-0 in four career matchups against the Lightning at Barclays Center.

- After riding a six-game winning streak, New York has now lost two of its last three contests. The Isles are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games.

- Sunday's game marks the second leg of a home back-to-back set for the Islanders. The Islanders are 5-0-0 on the second night of back-to-backs this season.

- Josh Bailey has recorded 19 points (7G, 12A) in 30-career games against Tampa. Bailey tallied an assist in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Rangers.

- The Islanders played their last two games against the crosstown New York Rangers, splitting the home-and-home set at one. Both teams concluded the season series at 2-2-0.

- Thomas Greiss is expected to start in goal for the Islanders as Barry Trotz splits his goalies on the back-to-back set. Greiss last played on Tuesday vs Carolina and is looking for his first win since Dec. 17, though the Isles goalie has only made three starts since.

- Nick Leddy has collected one assist in five of his last seven games.

- Jordan Eberle is one goal shy of 200 career goals.

- New York (52 points) is fourth in the Metropolitan Division behind the third-place Columbus Blue Jackets (55 points). The Islanders currently have the second wild card berth in the Eastern Conference.

*The Islanders will try to accomplish something on Sunday that no ever Metropolitan Division was able to do in the first half of the season -- earn a win over the NHL's top team.*

LIGHTNING NOTES

- The Tampa Bay Lightning lead the NHL with 35 wins and 72 points - 10 more points than the Western-Conference leading Calgary Flames.

- The Lightning are on a roll, having won 10 of their last 11 games and 18 of their last 20.

- This is the second game of a road back-to-back for Tampa Bay. The Lightning defeated the Buffalo Sabres by a 5-3 margin on Saturday night.

- Nikita Kucherov leads the NHL with 74 points (22G, 52A). Brayden Point is sixth in the NHL with 61 points - and leads the Lightning with 29 goals - while Steven Stamkos is tied for 17th with with 51 points.

- Stamkos has registered at least one point in eight of his last nine games against the Islanders. Stamkos has 14 points (4G, 10A) in that span for the Lightning.

- On Jan. 11, the Lightning acquired D Jan Rutta and a 2019 seventh-round pick from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for D Slater Koekkoek and a 2019 fifth-round pick.

I envy the lighting so much. They’ve hit on licks after the 1st round that are stars. Kucherov and Point.

When you can find players after the first round you’re going to be a successful franchise.

Kucherov has 75pts. That’s just stupid.

They are a fantastic team and they will destroy us tonight. Only reason I will watch this is to see a great team in action. After the game last night I can`t in my wildest dream see Isles coming away with anything from this match.

Hoping for 2 points but will be happy with 1. As long as the effort is there...play with some passion, a sense of urgency. Tampa is a great team, Isles are capable of playing better than they have of late. Isles steal a point.

That TB record is gaudy .

At least we see Hedman ,one of my favorite nhl D. Even before his breakout season a few yrs ago,I thought he played the isles with a chip on his shoulder for passing him over in the draft.

Best Defensman in the league imo. Total package. He’s as good offensively as he is defensively. In hindsight maybe we should have picked him. True franchise defenseman.

Even before he broke out,I hated his games against the nyi. Always played a physical, chippy game that had me pulling my hair out and cursing him.

They’re on a back to back. I wouldn’t expect you’re going to see Tampa play their best game tonight
If that’s the best thing I have to hang my hat on I’ll still pencil in the L

They're better than half the league at 50%.

Part of the reason their record may be so good is that they’ve played only 4 back to backs all season which is fewest in the league. The only team they played well against in the 2nd game was Chicago and they still trailed 3-2 entering the 3rd before winning 6-3. They lost 7-1 to Arizona on a back to back and tied Ottawa in the final 12 seconds and won in an SO. So they have played lousy hockey against teams much worse than us on back to backs. Don’t be surprised if we win 4-1 or 5-2 tonight. We are also due to play a good game. Sometimes the timing on these things works in your favor

With Greiss in net against this team, we will need 5 and probably 6 goals to get a point out of this game. And to make things even better, while we start our backup, they have Vasilevskiy in net. Good luck with that !!!!

Tampa fan here. First of all, screw Tavares. How he handled the situation was pathetic. So I am rooting for your organization. Anyways, I just wanted to stop by and say that I have been super impressed with how your club has handled the season's circumstances, how you guys seem to be improving significantly under Trotz, and how Barzal appears to be clicking into gear after a rough start. Good luck tonight. Hope you guys make the playoffs. You deserve it.

Recent lack of Isles offensive production points to a whitewashing tonight. Not looking forward to this game, but I’ll watch anyway. As long as they play hahd, I’ll be happy.

Islanders will once again leave non believers confused ...Very possible Islanders shut Tampa down in a low scoring affair.

Many will scratch their heads....Need everyone to throw some checks...they do not like being checked.
Trots needs to give himself a chance 4th line needs 12-14 mins TOI...That means No soft stick penalties from the top 6

Really this game is just a bonus if they get any points at all. However, with that said, St. Louis, Devils, Anaheim, Chicago and Washington needs to be minimum 7 points before the all star break. Over that five game stretch this team needs to get its act together or things will likely spiral downward.

They played yesterday and won with Domingue in net. They saved Vasilevskiy for us.

Maybe we'll only lose by a field goal instead of a touchdown.
