When the New York Islanders and New York Rangers split a pair of high-scoring games in November, it appeared both teams might stay in contention for postseason spots in the Eastern Conference.

Nearly two months later, the Islanders are ascending while the Rangers are dealing with a significant tailspin and falling way behind in the playoff race.

On Saturday afternoon, the teams will get together for the last time this season and for the last time at Brooklyn's Barclays Center when then Rangers visit the Islanders in the back end of a home-and-home set.

On Nov. 15, Anthony Beauvillier recorded a hat trick in the Islanders' 7-5 win in Brooklyn and six days later the Rangers scored three times in the first period of a 5-0 home win. After the second meeting, the Islanders were 10-8-2 while the Rangers were 12-8-2.

Since then, the Islanders (24-14-4) are 14-6-2 in their last 22 games while the Rangers (17-19-7) are 5-11-5 in their last 21 contests.

The Islanders also are 7-1 in their last eight games after Josh Bailey scored the game-winning goal on their only shot of the third period with 86 seconds left against the Rangers on Thursday.

The Rangers are on a five-game losing streak and during their longest skid of the season, they are getting outscored 26-8. The skid began with lopsided losses to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes before close losses to the Vegas Golden Knights and Islanders.

Thursday's loss was the second time in this skid the Rangers outshot their opponent and it occurred after a 17-1 advantage in the third period. New York also allowed two power-play goals to the Islanders and have allowed eight goals in 21 chances with the man advantage during the skid.

While Bailey's game-winner was only his third goal since the mid-November meetings with the Rangers, Mathew Barzal has 11 goals since then, including eight tallies in his last seven games.
Chris Kreider leads the Rangers with 20 goals but has gone a season-high six straight games without a goal. Mika Zibanejad leads the Rangers with 35 points but since getting four assists two weeks ago in Nashville, he has one point in his last six contests.

The Rangers also may be without Kevin Hayes. Hayes is second on the Rangers with 33 points but has missed the last four games without an upper-body injury, though he participated in the morning skate on Thursday.

Thursday's outcome also continued the Islanders dominance of the rivalry in recent seasons and they will be facing the Rangers in a place they have never lost.

Since the Islanders began playing games in Brooklyn in 2015-16, they are 13-2 in 15 meetings with the Rangers and 7-0 in Brooklyn with six wins coming in regulation. During the last 15 meetings, the Islanders have outscored the Rangers 54-37.

Henrik Lundqvist, who has been pulled twice during New York's skid, is 0-6-1 in his last seven games against the Islanders. He also is 1-11-2 in his last 14 games against the Islanders since the start of the 2014-15 season.

Robin Lehner is expected to start for the Islanders. He made 16 of his 27 saves in the third period Thursday and is on a career-high eight-game winning streak since a 3-2 loss to Vegas on Dec. 12.

Saturday is the first of six remaining home games for the Islanders in Brooklyn. Their final game at the home of the Brooklyn Nets is Feb. 16 against the Edmonton Oilers.

I hope the isles learn from that 3rd period on Thursday, and come out flying for a full 60 minutes and lay the wood on ‘em. A total domination game. Overall though just get the 2 points, don’t care how.

Anders Lee has a 4 game point streak (2-4-6) and has an assist in each of those games.
Isles are 6-0-2 at home when they are outshot, 4-6-1 when they have more shots. (For the season: 5-9-1 when they outshoot their opponent, 19-4-3 when outshot.

Vesey (2a) and Fast (2g) are on a 2 game point streak.

Isles win this one with a better effort. Keep the legs moving....draw some penalties and create scoring chances.

Hopefully Barzal keeps his 2PPG pace against the Rags. Our team better be ready, Im sure Rangers dont want to lose second Stanley cup in three nights.

I have a feeling we wont see Hank today, even though he played well for him last meeting. Didnt even get pulled, allstar performance.

I love these afternoon games, so I can watch it live at home, nice 8PM puck drop for me.

I thought we would get the 60 minute effort in the last Ranger game ( after Trotz's tough practice).

I want to see MDC pot one. Get the goal scoring monkey off his back.

Let's go Isles

We be a good day for Pelech to get some rest.

I'd run him back out there since Hickey isn't ready yet. Give him the ability to right his wrongs from last game.

The Isles need to put this Rags team away early. Just crush them in the opening fifteen minutes and make them not want to play the remainder of the game. Not interested in another debacle like Thursday night, and would prefer to keep the goon factor low if possible.

The Rangers wouldn't. If they continue to dress McLeod and McQuaid then Trotz will be forced to have Matt Martin and Ross Johnston in the same lineup.

I'm okay dressing those two, just hope the game gets to a point where they're rather go home than break a hand (again).

Yeah, a stellar third period from Hank. Not a single save.

He was rather ordinary the rest of the game too.

first of a back to back. Saw Eric Hornick mention that we are 9-1 in back to backs this year. 5-0 on the back end.. Is that possible? Crazy.

Gotta get a better effort today. Need these two points and looking for a convincing win... Let's right the ship.. TBL tomorrow.

Edit: I checked our schedule, and yes 9-1 in our 5 back to backs this year including the last one ending in a 4-0 vs Tor

Pens are hot, damnit.. They were trailing 3-0 after 1 when I went to bed last night, woke up to find out they won 7-4..
Yeah. The Ducks are a hot mess. I think that was their 10th straight loss.

Frankly i cannot see the Rangers with the same approach to this game...will they turn nasty?...they have the ability.

They may or at least are better off sending their 4th line after the top lines a bit....the more they lessen the 4th line matches the better off the rags are....Our 4th line can play against any one...Not so sure theirs can but this is a avenue they may take.

The less Drama they try against our bottom 6 with their 4th line the better off they are. They may rattle out top lines forcing Trots to sub players on the top lines for protection of sort, the better way to word it is have Physical players sub for the meek in the top lines.

Look for a raucous crowd ..if tempers get the better of the rags ...it will be a Pittsburg game of the past. Don't really need that with the Islanders being in Playoff position vs a team that is not.

I’m thinking Greiss in today and have Lehner go against the Lightning to give us the best chance to win both these games.
