Many expected a somewhat one-sided series between the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders prior to the start of the second round. It hasn’t been the case outside of the series opener, as the teams have needed overtime to decide a winner in the last two contests.

After the teams combined for 14 goals in the first two games, Game 3 was the offensive struggle many expected prior to the series. Casey Cizikas won Game 2 for the Isles in Boston, but Brad Marchand returned the favor in front of the Isles fans at the Nassau Coliseum in Game 3 to give the Bruins a 2-1 win.

Will the Isles be able to rebound after their tough loss and even the series? Or will they head to Boston facing elimination in Game 5? Let’s dive into this pivotal Game 4.

What We’ve Learned So Far

Boston has a 2-1 series lead, and it’s probably deserved. The Bruins dominated the Isles in Game 1, but the two teams have played nearly dead-even games over the last two contests. In Games 2 and 3, the expected goal battle favored Boston, 4.6 to 4.35. The high danger chances were dead even, with both teams generating 16 each.

After posting a 91% expected goal rate in Game 1, it looked like the “Perfection Line” featuring Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak was going to dominate the series. However, the Isles have done a tremendous job since that point against Boston’s number one unit. The trio has less than one expected goal (xG) combined in the last two games, while posting an xG rate of just 42.5%. Barry Trotz has entrusted Adam Pelech, Ryan Pulock and Jean-Gabriel Pageau to slow down the explosive line, and they’ve done well thus far in limiting their zone time.

However, another Bruins’ line has emerged as a potential issue for the Isles. The Isles have had no answer for Boston’s second line featuring Taylor Hall and David Krejci. Hall was not on the ice for a single Isles shot on goal in Game 3. In this series, they’ve posted a 78.1% expected goal rate. They’ve particularly feasted on the Isles’ second defensive pairing with Scott Mayfield and Nick Leddy.

However, there’s some very encouraging news for the Isles as well. After a slow start to the postseason, it appears Mathew Barzal has arrived. Barzal scored his first goal of the playoffs to tie the game late in the third period on Thursday, but even prior to that, he looked like a different player the past few games. Barzal has appeared dangerous every time he’s had the puck on his stick, and the numbers back that up as he’s posted nearly a 58% expected goal rate in this series.

The goaltending in this series has been weird. Ilya Sorokin started Game 1 for the Isles and lost, leading Barry Trotz to turn the crease over to Semyon Varlamov. Varlamov has given up early goals in both of the last two games, but has been solid for the most part after that.

However, Marchand’s overtime winner in Game 3 was atrocious on Varlamov’s part. Rarely is a goaltender scapegoated after giving up just one goal in regulation and making 39 saves, but it sure did feel like the Isles were on their way to a win in that overtime prior to Varlamov’s whiff. Trotz has expressed his confidence in Varlamov, so expect Sorokin to remain glued to the bench in Saturday’s contest.

In the other crease, Tuukka Rask was brilliant at the start of overtime to give the Bruins a chance to win. He’s posted a 92.2% save percentage in this series. He’s posted a +1.2 goals saved above expectation in this series and quieted the critics who emerged after his average Game 2 performance.

They must generate more chances. Offensively they've looked quite pedestrian (credit, some, to Boston).

I don't care where, who, or how the goals come, but they must score to keep themselves in this series. The D and G has played well enough to win.

I've seen 2 of the 3 games being Islanders hockey, which mean it's been well suited to the Bruins as well. Now it's our turn to do to the B's what they did to us in Game 1.

Last game the crowd was a work-night crowd. Loud but not baked like we get when we've been in the parking lot for 5 hours before a game. That will change today. This is the first time we've had a legit Saturday tailgate in June. Long hours of daylight. 90 degrees and sunny all day is the forecast. Stay hydrated folks. Bring sunscreen. And most of all ROCK THE BARN!

Play 60 minutes (or even 50) instead of 20 and things should take care of themselves.

I hope it's quiet here because you goofballs are already in the parking lot drinking.

I remain oddly calm about this series. Maybe it's confidence because they're going to win. Or maybe I'll just be oddly calm right into the offseason in a few days. I'm hoping it's the former. The team playing more than 10 or 20 minutes a game would help. LGI.

Well, it isn't rocket science really when it comes to beating the Bruins. Some on here just don't want to admit the obvious. No matter what each eye-popping stat reveals, we continue to make excuses to justify the insanity.

Truth is, how the third line goes (and the first line is a completely different argument completely) is how we fare...period. And with Wahlstrom, it fares obviously better than with Zajac. The numbers prove this. No, I don't know how hurt he really is, but we could obviously use him and not just on the PP.

We have beaten the Bruins 6 out of 11 this season (yes, I realize in four of those games we had Lee, one of those games they didn't have Pastrnak and they didn't have Hall in any of the first five where we won all of them) but some things hold true regardless. If the shot differential is huge, we lose and if it is manageable we generally win. Also, if the third line scores we win, and when they are shut out; we lose....plain and simple.

First off the shot differential.

*The Islanders are (0-4) when the shot differential is higher than 10
*The Islanders are (6-1) when the shot differential is 10 or less (the lone win coming when they were outshot by only 3, but were a dismal 0 for 5 on the PP)
*In the 6 games they have won, the Islanders have been outshot by a combined total of 11 shots (2 per game)
*In the 5 games they have lost, the Islanders have been outshot by a combined total of 75 shots (15 per game)

This isn't Jarry we are facing in net. You CANNOT continue to get outshot by a large margin and expect to win....period.

You also CANNOT continue to lose the PP battle/war.

*The Islanders have lost all 3 games (0-3) when they lose the PP battle (surrendering more power play goals than they get) and (2-0) when they win said battles

The actual difference in the power play hasn't been that much really (Islanders are 3/9 in the series and 6/29 overall (20.7%) compared to the Bruins 3/6 in the series and 7/31 overall (22.6%). Unfortunately however in the last six games (1-5) the Islanders lone win came when they won the PP battle.

But most importantly is that third line.

*How the third line goes generally tells us the outcome. In the 6 wins, that third line (usually with Wahlstrom) has combined for 10 goals- in the losses they have none (Wahlstrom had a PP goal)

*Pageau in particular:
In the six wins he has 6 goals, 4 assists and a (+8)
In the five losses he has 0 goals, 0 assists and a (-2)

*It actually tells the story in the entire playoffs. Even against the Penguins, how they fared generally told the story. Pageau was 1-6-7 (+6) in the 4 wins and shutout completely in the two losses. Palmieri had 3 goals in the series and was a (+3)- all assisted by JPG and one by Wahlstrom (who also had a PP goal). Ollie was a (+3) but more importantly got 8 shots on net.

Zajac? Well, in four games now he has the lone assist on Pulock's goal in the clinching game against the Pens, which is one more point than he has managed in his other 12 starts on that line. His other goal and assist came in his brief time on the top line.

Speaking of the top line, where we continue to roll out Uncle Leo alongside Eberle and Barzal, here are those stats against the Bruins:

*The Islanders are (4-0) with Lee on the top line, (1-4) with Komarov on the top line and (1-1) with someone else on the top line (MDC and Zajac) alongside Barzal and Eberle against the Bruins

We all know that top line has been an absolute zero in these playoffs when it comes to scoring. Even in the 4-3 OT win, the lone assist came from Barzal on the PP. The lone goal in the last defeat had Palms out there and not Leo and the only EV goal mustered in these playoffs with those 3 on the ice together was Pelech's wrister.

Meanwhile that top line on Boston continues to average 8 plus shots a game and continues to find ways to beat us.

Lastly:

*The Islanders are (1-5) with the lone win coming in OT, with both Zajac and Palmeiri in the lineup and Hall being in the lineup for Boston.
*In those six games, the Islanders have been outshot by 78 (13 per game) and outscored 20-10

and...

*The Islanders are (4-0) when they score 3 goals or more

I know Barry isn't likely to make any changes to our 12 tonight and that is unfortunate, but at least we know where we stand. Again, I have no idea how hurt Wahlstrom is (if he can go though, it is no doubt he should start over Travis) but for me it is simple....get more shots to the net and continue to play Islander hockey. Keep the shots close and keep them out of the box (Bruins have had 2 PP or more in every matchup this season, 31 total) and that third line needs to shine. How they go, we go. I would repeat again that Barzal and that top line needs to get going, but it is clear to me that he is going to have to figure that out on his own...

It would also help if we don't get behind early (speaking to you Mr.Varlamov) as we have lost the last 4 in a row when they have scored first.....

Regular season statistics do not matter, throw them out the window.

I like how you're calling people out for not understanding what needs to be done while you're saying what a lot of people on here have said. The Islanders will win if they can win the middle 6 battle. We need to limit their damage on the PP too, this isn't groundbreaking stuff. Our PP has been more successful this round than last, without Wahlstrom, but the PK has been significantly worse as well (credit to Boston's dynamic PP).
