What do the bruins need, to give them the best chance, come playoff time?

If there was a remote chance in hell David Backes could be traded without major salary retained he would be gone by morning. He has top 5 worst contracts in the league and flies under the radar next to guys like Lucic and Clarkson who were only marginally worse signings.

This one is painful now and will be downright agonizing before it’s over

The 'contract' itself becomes tradable in July.

The player isn't tradable but someone might want a leader plus another asset or two. But are we really going to use the cap room next year anyway?

I voted nothing, but I'd acquire a scoring winger for the right deal. Not overpaying for a rental. This team when healthy is better than many of our own fans think

Could be. Shall be interesting the next 2 - 3 weeks because this team is healthy. But you’re right the bruins should be able to be more effective with everyone healthy.

1 more really good player a first liner regardless of positions. Could center the 3rd line but thread title suggests they are a secondary talent. We need an 8 mil guy not a 3-4. I think we can squeeze in one more big contract. Don't need an expensive second/third liner that is how you get in trouble.

So they might win one game in the second round? This team as currently constructed is mediocre at best and a one and done. They look more and more like a tweener team for years to come. No real impact prospects, bunch of third and fourth line forward types and AHL/ NHL tweeners (Bjork, Cave, Acarri, Kuraly) and a number if 3rd pair dmen (Vaak, Lauzon, Zboril).

Simply getting a wing for Krecji and a real third line center wont be enough to make them contenders and having lived through the Sinden years of "make the playoffs to make JJ money" years it is looking more and more like those days again, just with inept management instead of purely greedy (still haven't used that cap space they had to deal McQuaid to get)

For all the people saying #3C.... who? The rental market for #3C is garbage.

I totally agree that getting a C is a great move... especially with TB and Tor... but who?

The Wild are out of a playoff spot at the moment, and just lost Dumba for at least 3 months after surgery for a ruptured right pectoralis muscle. I hope Sweeney takes a good look at Eric Staal and his 3.5 mil cap hit that expires after the season as a rental.

I still voted for a scoring wing as the top priority, but if you're looking for a cup run and want to be strong down the middle, Bergy / Krejci / Staal sounds pretty good to me. I think he'll cost less as a rental, and won't get in the way of any of the young centers we have knocking on the door, and I give him bonus points for being a left shot.

Ignoring that you keep writing off every single prospect...

What more do they need other than a 2nd line wing and 3C? If they add those things they are absolutely contenders.

Dumba is out for 3 months, if Minny needs a dee we could help them out for Coyle or Staal or both for a dee, prospect and pick.

Well more depth and better players on the third and fourth lines. get a good 3rd line center and put him with Backes and you have a decent start to a third line. Heinen as your fourth line defensive/pk specialist works as well. So a tough RW that can play on the fourth line, a player that brings what Donato is suppose to to the third line and a good gritty 4th line C with energy. Still need to make sure your second line RW is a real second line RW not somebody playing above his position because it was all they could get. Then hope Chara can have a good second half, Carlo continues to improve, McAvoy plays consistently and Miller stays healthy and you might make the conference finals.

And I'll stop writing off prospects when they have some that I have some confidence in. McAvoy and Carlo are both very good, as is DeBrusk. Heinen, Donato, Bjork, Senyshyn and Zboril aren't yet and I doubt any of them will ever be impact players

This team plays in the West, they have a good shot to play in the WCF.

I just hope we don't do some stupid trade for a rental in the twilight of his career like Rick Nash.

If we do trade for a long term winger, I assume Donato/Bjork, a defensive prospect, and some other shiz could be heading back the other way.

If we want a rental 3C, we better be trading pennies.

Give me another Chris Kelly for a pick

And another Peverley for a prospect / young foward (hopefully one that doesn’t become a multi time all star)

And let’s roll baby I want both

This team reminds me of the Ottawa Senators after their Finals run. One big line, good defensive depth and not much else... We have 5 forwards Bergy, Marchand, Pasta, Krecji and Debrusk. We are going to need at least 2 more quality impact players up front to make any kind of a run. The rest of the forwards are either to green or simply to weak overall. I have had my fill of the fourth line too, I'm tired of watching Sean Kuraly skate with his head down and protect the puck from the halfwall to behind the net without a shot being generated. He has been going with the Kevan Miller "hang on to the puck with your head down as long as you can until you get stripped" offensive strategy. It would be nice to Kuraly just jam the puck on net like he did when he came onto the scene. Sadly I think the novelty has worn off with him and it might be time for him to pack his bags and go the way of Tim Schaller.
