just thought I’d let everyone know, but Kyle Dubas is joining Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman on the 31 Thoughts podcast today. The episode should be out later tonight.

I’m sure there will be some good insight on the Tavares process, as well as the AHL Championship season, among other things.

Oh man can't wait for this!! :handclap:

In my mind Dubas is the front runner for executive of the year! :handclap::handclap::handclap:

31 Thoughts: The Podcast - Doing Deals With Dubas : Summary

- Started looking at possibility of JT in February, pushed through after playoffs against Boston. And went full speed a few days before the negotiation period.

- A lot of work was done in preparing for JT, as with any free agents. He said a lot of the time all this work ends up not working out because the FA usually re-signs with their team.

- He didn't have a great feel for how the presentation went once it concluded in LA. They believe they did well but he had a hard time getting a read on how it had gone.

- They got word on June 30th late at night that JT was leaning towards the Leafs, but it was made official when JT and his fiancee walked into the doors on July 1st.

- Was asked about his emotional outburst when handed the Calder Cup. He said it's not that common for him to get like that but when an entire team and the entire staff involved got the team to where it is, knowing what everyone has contributed/sacrificed he gets emotional when celebrating that fact.

- He also mentioned how the staff behind the scenes with the Maple Leafs that have been here for over 4+ years were all coming up to him, thanking him for bringing a hometown guy like JT especially with how the media portrays the pressure aspect and how no one wants to play for their hometown team due to the added pressure. He said, his front office and everyone within the team does not believe that to be true, maybe more so in the past. (fishbowl, pressure, media, etc).

- Focus with JT was on hockey and who we are as a team, this is our program, this is how our development side will play into the team, here are all the facets of our program that we built out over time.

- He said whereas two years ago with Stammer, they didn't focus so much on hockey and who they were as a team but more so who they will become as a team, and here is who we intend to be, which didn't sell Stammer.

- Our core wanted to get involved with the JT negotiations (AM, Marner, Nylander, Kadri, Rielly, etc). A LOT OF them came to Dubas asking him if he wanted them to come to LA, or anywhere to help land JT to Toronto. They were all ears and had their arms wide open to welcome a player like JT.

- EF asks him "Did you create a situation where you imagine JT scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal or someone with him at home in Toronto?" Dubas replies with laughter, and says a strong NO. He says it's not that he's superstitious, it's his biggest goal to bring a championship here but he has a strong leniency to not tempt karma and continue to do things the right way. He hopes to get there one day though.

- Roster Construction:

He says, the easy answer is that only one doesn't have a contract (William). They are all very important players to the team and the future. His belief is that rather rushing to get it done on the first day, if player is signing up here long-term, he believes he has to sit with them and convey to them what the vision for the team is, what they're signing up for (1-8 years), the ultimate goal is they will be here their whole career.

He feels whenever a player is making a long term commitment, he wants to discuss with each individual on where we are as a team, what the vision is for the team going forward, what the plan is, etc. He mentions the players are not just signing for the term and the nice pay increase. He wants them all to know where they fit in the team. He will remain patient, and doesn't see the signings to be imminent, at least not as of today.

- Can he keep the trio? "We can, and we will."

- Bozak's PT article was brought up, specifically his last quote regarding Dubas and the core being special. Dubas mentions that he always has felt you get a great read on how the organization/business is, where they're headed and how happy the players are when a player who is leaving has such nice things to say about the organization. He said he didn't have to do that, but he did and it was very meaningful to him and to the organization. He wants to continue to build on this narrative. The UFAs who left, he mentions we are not as far along as an organization without any of them even though they are now on new teams (Bozak, JvR, Leo, Polak, etc).

- Who were you happiest for when the Marlies won the Cup? Happy for everybody, especially with the long grind of the season starting in September. 9 months of commitment and dedication never wavered. It was outstanding. Every game the Marlies played they had the most entry level players, the vets did a great job of bringing the youngsters along. He said a lot of the guys on the Marlies played so well, showed great character and believes a lot of them have earned that extra attention towards taking a spot on the big club.
