I was too young for 1988. I don't recall a single Devils season in recent memory where we were fighting for our playoff lives with less than 10 games to go. I'm used to watching other teams go through it, most memorably Philly and the Rags going at it for the last playoff spot in 2010. It's exciting and thrilling, but not something I would want to experience every year. It's affecting my day to day life. Each game either puts me in a good mood or a very depressed mood until the next one.

Well 2011 they had the illusory, brief playoff run but it never got closer than six. 2013 and 2014 they had playoff races but came up short in the end. But yeah in the glory days the only true playoff race I can remember was obviously the '95-96 disaster. It got a little close for comfort late in Sutter's first year here when they were in a death spiral but they still did finish with the #4 seed.

It's been a long time since a successful late playoff push though, usually we clinched before the stretch run and it was about winning divisions and getting home-ice rather than survival.

Honestly if you take yourself a bit out of the state of the race, you would look back and find that 3rd period insanely entertaining.

It absolutely was nuts. Both teams could have easily won in regulation.
It really felt like a playoff game. The last time my heart beat that fast was 2012. The last time I celebrated a goal like I did Hall's OT winner was Game 6 vs the Rags. Oh how I've missed meaningful hockey.

I remember 88, but there was no sense of us *belonging* in the playoffs. It wasn't real until we had already almost run the table, and then you knew that the rags would somehow get over.

This is different.

The mojo is almost 94ish, though, where Marty, nieder added a tangible lift to some decent talent, and you kinda feel that the young guys have more desire and character than the vets... And somehow someway they're going to get the job done.

I'm with you though.. it is day to day torture... But in a good way.

He was covering for severson who pinched in on the boards. Frigging jackass was almost unwatchable at times tonight.

Kink was awesome. That Coleman goal might go down as one of the biggest of the season. Thought vats made a lot of important little plays, and Moore actually surprised me with some great stick work breaking up dangerous passes.... Of which there seemef to be a million tonight.

Can't decide if we should rest kk and try to get the monkey off Cory's back tomorrow... But if it turns ugly, he might never recover.

Severson was the first man in and everyone else was stupidly aggressive.

I wouldn't pin that on Severson. Zacha came in way too hot and was caught when the puck bounced past him. Then Palmieri panicked at the blue line.

Either way, Palms should have skated with the play, but was slow to decide and subsequently left in the dust......

I'm sorry, what was the situation? Up 1 on the road in the third? Wtf WTF are you doing below the dots, leaving a forward at the point... Against Pitt? I'd bench his dumb ass. He got caught again later and it led to a 3-on-1 too. Stupid stuff.

correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't marty get his career started after he took over an injured chris terreri in '93-'94?

perhaps kinkaid CAN take the next step in his career, with schneider's current down season. not saying he's anything like marty at all LOL but the circumstances are interesting/have been interesting

The can of worms was there to be opened. Go directly to the other thread, do not pass go.

Terreri was a good goalie, but it wasn't like he was a NUMBER 1. Other than Burke, we always had kinda middling vets, and 'Scary' was fun in an Arthurs irbe sort of way, where you didn't expect much. It was clear Marty was a talent and certainly carried himself that way from the start... Wasnt like... Here's a fill-in backup... More like how things went with vasilevsky.

During that sequence started by a Grabner breakaway....how that puck did not end up in the net is mind-boggling.

I know people in here were cursing but that PK which had the Grabs miss was a huge moment.

It was all Pitt to that point, but we were able to efen the ice just enough after that to hold on.

Random stats time

We now pass the 02-03 Devils in goals scored on the season.

We also just passed the 09-10 Devils in goals scored with this game. Both those teams scored 216 goals, we’ve scored 218 goals. I thought I saw the 09-10 team had 222 goals, but I guess I was looking another year’s team?

We’ve already outscored our highest scoring team since we’ve been missing the playoffs. That was the 197 goal 13-14 team. We passed that in the Montreal game a couple weeks ago.

11 more goals to pass the 11-12 team, 16 more goals to pass the 05-06 team and 21 goals to pass the 08-09. So this is already our fourth highest scoring season since 2000-2001. No chance at adding 79 goals to pass them haha.

We’re gonna pass the 11-12 team, we’re probably gonna pass the 05-06 team, we might not be able to pass the 08-09 team in goals scored, but won’t completely rule it out either.
