Nashville (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen), who I mentioned following his debut and has massive potential good enough for a future Breeders' Cup race, won the opener this morning in a dominant performance under a hand ride. He is a $460,000 purchase and is now 3 3-0-0.

Saturday, November 7, 2020 (part 1 of 2)

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Second day of the meet: Absolutely bewildering. As with yesterday, many riders from other tracks or locals who received a higher volume of mounts since the top riders went to Keeneland.
  • Race 11: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $94,000.
  • Race 9: Sharp Starr (Trevor McCarthy/Horacio DePaz) won by almost 16 lengths. A demolition of epic proportions.
  • Race 8: The $1 Pick 3 was over $34,000 which could be the largest I have seen this year.
  • Race 7: Mr. Fidget (Pablo Morales/James Ferraro) was sent off at 32-to-1 and paid $66. With 8-to-1 and 88-to-1 completing the trifecta ticket, the return was over $7,300 for $.50. The $1 Pick 3 was almost $6,000. The $1 double was over $2,113 which could very well be the largest in North America this year.
  • Race 6: Caramocha (Hector Diaz, Jr./Mitch Friedman) wired the field by more than four lengths in her debut at 99-to-1 -- an actual 99-1 -- to pay $201.50 for a $2 win bet. The New York-bred was purchased for $100,000 as a yearling. That price and 99-to-1 in a debut don't often go hand-in-hand. A startling composition.
  • Race 5: Won by more than 10 lengths.
  • Race 3: Royal Flag (Trevor McCarthy/Chad Brown) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Turn the Alarm Handicap.

  • Handle: $11 million
  • Kendrick Carmouche added three wins to his meet lead of seven victories.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 2: Sublimity (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) was the lone first-time starter in the race, was sent off the favorite and powered home from the 5th spot in the stretch to give the married couple another victory. They went 3-for-3 the past two days. Sheldon is 61 18-6-9 (30%/54%) at the meet while his wife Brittany is 15 9-2-4 (60%/100%). As a team they are approaching 40% this year.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • The complete replay show:

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Breeders' Cup: Day two of the Breeders' Cup is in a separate post below.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Race 6: The $.50 Pick 3 paid more than $5,200.
  • Race 5: The $1 double was $1,603.50.
  • Race 4: Omar Attack (Isaiah Wiseman/Vance Childers) won at 116-to-1 and paid $235.60/$92.00/$23.80. A stunning result! The $1 exacta was $956.30. The $.50 tri was over $1,400. The $.50 Pick 3 was $3,600.

  • Race 3: A winner who wired the field by more than 12 lengths.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 6 paid out $47,000+.
  • Race 7: Good With People (Ricardo Gonzalez/Peter Miller), a 2-year-old California-bred colt, won the $150,000 Golden Gate Juvenile Stakes. He was the favorite in a field of nine. The win gave the jockey and trainer a sweep of the two juvenile stakes for Cali-breds -- also the Golden State Juvenile Fillies with September Secret on Friday.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 6: Heavenly Curlin (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) won the Grade 3 $125.000 Maple Leaf. The filly loves Toronto. She is 3-for-3 at Woodbine, 0-for-2 elsewhere.
  • Race 8: Skywire (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) won the Grade 2 $175,000 Autumn. He is 8 4-3-0 at Woodbine on the local synthetic surface and 1-for-6 elsewhere.
  • Rafael Hernandez-Mark Casse won their first three opportunities as a team. Casse is three wins away from 3,000 lifetime. Two wins were graded stakes, the only two on the card.
  • Mark Casse: Has 89 wins this meet which is more than double his closest challenger.
  • Handle: $8.4 million.

The 37th annual Breeders' Cup -- 14 races recap (5 on Friday + 9 on Saturday)
  • Multiple wins for jockeys: Pierre-Charles Boudrot, Florent Geroux, Irad Ortiz, Jr., Joel Rosario and John Velazquez each with two.
  • Multiple-wins for trainers: Brad Cox (4), who had three total Breeders' Cup wins entering this year's edition, and Bob Baffert (2).
  • Multiple winners for sires: Into Mischief (2).
  • Homes for winners: Kentucky (7), Europe (4), California (2) and Parx/Philadelphia (1).
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Handle (Friday + Saturday): $160,472,894 which is the sixth largest in history.
  • Handle (Saturday): $110,186,908
  • Track records: The fractions were impressive much of the day. There were five track records set.
  • Europeans: Had an exceptional day winning all four turf races. Each winner was using Lasix for the first time. Lasix is not allowed in the B.C. for 2-year-olds.
  • Weather: Ideal!
  • First post: 10:15 a.m. ET.
  • Race 12: Authentic (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade I $6,000,000 Breeders' Cup Classic. He wired the field and set a track record by going 1 1/4 miles on the dirt in under two minutes at a brilliant 1:59.19. The 3-year-old colt was purchased for $350,000 and has earned over $6.1 million. He is 8 6-2-0 lifetime with his lone losses in the Preakness Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. Velazquez's two wins in Breeders' Cup races puts him at 18 which is 8 behind all-time leader Mike Smith who did not participate in the 2020 edition. Authentic received a 109 Beyer figure for his performance. Baffert won this race for the fourth time in the past seven years. Improbable (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Bob Baffert) finished second. The all-Baffert exacta paid $22.70 for $1. Baffert had three in the race and also finished fifth with Maximum Security (Luis Saez/Bob Baffert). The pre-race favorite was Tiz the Law (Manny Franco/Barvclay Tagg) finished sixth. The $.50 Pick 5 was $81,000+. The $1 Pick 6 was over $33,000.
    • Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winners in the same year:
      • Authentic 2020
      • American Pharoah 2015
      • Unbridled 1990
      • Sunday Silence 1989
  • Race 11: Tarnawa (Colin Keane/Dermot Weld) won the Grade I $4,000,000 Breeders' Cup Turf. The Irish-bred raced in the USA for the first time. She is a perfect 4 4-0-0 in 2020. The 4-year-old filly is 14 8-2-2 and has earned over $2.8 million. Keane, in his first Breeders' Cup, was a replacement for Christophe Soumillon who was unavailable. Weld, the 72-year-old Irish-born and based trainer, won a Breeders' Cup race for the first time, he was 0-for-16 with just one time hitting the board. He is best known for winning the 1990 Belmont Stakes with Go and Go.
  • Race 10: Monomoy Girl (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) was sent off as the even-money favorite and won the Grade I $2,000,0000 Breeders' Cup Distaff. She improved her gaudy record to 15 13-2-0 including 10 wins in her past 11 starts with her lone defeat via DQ at Parx in September 2018. She last finished behind a horse in November 2017. Monomoy Girl was purchased for $100,000 and has earned over $4.4 million. Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver (Robby Albarado/Kenny McPeek) finished seventh after stumbling at the start. Albarado hit a home run in the Preakness and was part of a moment in time that should last forever. It is now his lone win with his past 51 mounts.

  • Race 9: Order of Australia (Pierre-Charles Boudrot/Aiden O'Brien) -- entered as an also eligible and running in the 15 post position with a replacement rider for Christophe Soumillon-- shocked the masses to win the Grade I $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Mile at odds of 73-to-1 which was the second largest in the event's history. The win paid $148.40. The 3-year-old Irish-bred colt, sired by Australia, raced in the USA for the first time and boosted his mark to 8 3-0-1 lifetime in becoming a millionaire. The trainer finished 1-2-3 in the race with all Irish-breds and by betting each the $.50 tri would have returned over $4,300. The $.10 super paid over $15,000. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $6,600. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $34,000.

  • Race 8: Whitmore (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Ron Moquett) won the Grade I $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Sprint comfortably by more than three lengths at 18-to-1. Whitmore became the third horse in Breeders' Cup Sprint history to win a race at the age of 7. He has won 13 times at the distance as part of a remarkable record of 38 15-11-3 and over $4.2 million earned.
  • Race 7: Audarya (Pierre-Charles Boudrot/J.R. Fanshawe), bred in France, won the Grade I $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. The 4-year-old filly has earned over $1.2 million after racing in the USA for the first time. She broke the track record for going 1 3/16 miles on the turf in 1.52:72. Fanshawe, the trainer, entered a horse in any Breeders' Cup for the first time.

  • Race 6: Knicks Go (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) won the Grade I $1,000,000 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. The 4-year-old Maryland-bred colt won for the 5th time in 17 starts and set a track mark in doing so by going one mile on the dirt in 1.33:85. He likes the Keeneland course going 5 3-1-0 lifetime. Jesus' Team (Luis Saez/Jose D'Angelo) placed at 62-to-1. The shortest and longest odds on the board comprised the exacta. Knicks Go received a 108 Beyer figure which was third highest on the card to Gamine's 110 and Authentic's 109.
  • Race 5: Glass Slippers (Tom Eaves/Kevin Ryan), bred in Great Britain, won the Grade I $1,000,000 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint. Eaves rode in his first Breeders' Cup year. The 4-year-old filly became the first European to win this race. She is 17 7-3-1 and raced in the USA for the first time. Ryan, the trainer, entered a horse in a Breeders' Cup for just the second time and is now 1-for-2. Wet Your Whistle (Jose Ortiz/Michael Trombetta) placed at 26-to-1 and paid $25 in the middle.
  • Race 4: Gamine (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert), a daughter to Into Mischief, improved to 6 4-0-1 after winning the Grade I $1,000,000 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint by more than 6 lengths. She set a track record for 7 furlongs at 1:20.20. She was purchased last year for $1,800,000 and has earned over $1,000,000. He two defeats: DQ'd from victory in her second start (at Oaklawn) and third in the Kentucky Oaks. Gamine received a 110 Beyer figure for her performance today which was the highest issued for the card.
  • Race 3: Merneith (Luis Saez/Bob Baffert) won the $125,000 Qatar Fort Springs. The winner, slightly cold as a betting option on the board, was purchased for $600,000 and is now 8 3-3-1. Saez was 0-for-22 lifetime in the Breeders' Cup entering this year's edition.
  • Race 2: Sleepy Eyes Todd (Joel Rosario/Miguel Silva) won the $150,000 Lafayette Stakes as the 4-to-1 favorite. The well-traveled horse who has made stops in Minnesota, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, West Virginia, California, Louisiana is the most successful ever for the trainer. A spill resulted in Absolutely Aiden (Chris Landeros/Wesley Hawley) being euthanized. The rider suffered minor injuries but had no other mounts scheduled.
  • Race 1: Nashville (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen), who I mentioned following his debut and has massive potential good enough for a future Breeders' Cup race, won the $125,000 opener this morning in a dominant performance under a hand ride. The 3-year-old colt is a $460,000 purchase and is now 3 3-0-0. He wired the field in 1.07.89 which set a track mark for six furlongs on dirt.
  • Christophe Soumillon was replaced on two mounts after testing positive for the C-virus and in both instances replacements won.
  • Bob Baffert entered three races and won each (one was not part of the Breeders' Cup). He now has 17 Breeders' Cup wins which is second only to Wayne Lukas's 20.
All-time leaders by wins:

  • Brad Cox trained two winners on both days and joined Richard Mandella's 2003 feat as the only trainers to win four times in any Breeders' Cup year. He is an incredible 7-for-20 in the Breeders' Cup lifetime. That stat should not be overlooked by anyone. Cox was a finalist for North America Trainer of the Year last year and is simply among the best at his profession.
  • Christophe Clement entered two horses in the Breeders' Cup but failed to win which brings his surprising record to 0-for-40 lifetime in the significant event.
  • Kenny McPeek is now 0-for-35 lifetime in Breeders' Cup races after failing to win with five starters this weekend.
  • Chad Brown, defending Trainer of the Year in North America, was 1-for-17 during the two days. Three of his turf superstars Uni, Sistercharlie and Rushing Fall, who have a combined 17 Grade I wins, are all expected to be retired.
  • Pierre-Charles Boudot won twice and joined Florent Geroux as the only riders in Breeders' Cup history to win their first two mounts. He was 0-for-3 lifetime in Breeders' Cup races entering this year. He is just 27 years of age.
  • John Velazquez and Joel Rosario were among the five riders who won multiple times this weekend. Both are among the six riders with 13 or more Breeders' Cup wins.

  • Jose Ortiz was 0-for-18 at the Breeders' Cup weekend. His career mark is now 3 wins with 68 (4%) mounts. He is likely to be a finalist for North American Jockey of the Year and has been a past winner. This is a difficult weekend to handicap, ride, train and do just about anything else with so many stars.
  • Tyler Gaffalione is 0-for-29 lifetime in the Breeders' Cup. I believe that is the most mounts without a winner for any rider in history. He hit the board just once with 10 mounts this weekend and that was a 94-to-1 shot that placed.
  • Where the winners were bred: Kentucky (4), Ireland (2), France (1), Great Britain (1) and Maryland (1).
  • 2021: The 38th Breeders' Cup World Championships will be held at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, California, November 5-6, 2021
  • 2022: The 39th Breeders' Cup World Championships will be held at Keeneland November 4-5, 2022.

Keeneland (Kentucky) sales:
  • Sold: The November Fasig-Tipton sales began today and is ongoing. Last year, 168 head sold for $68 million. The total money spent will be more this year.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: Pickin' Time (Trevor McCarthy/Kelly Breen) pulled an upset as he won the Grade 3 $100,000 Nashua Stakes at 9-to-1. The 2-year-old colt won for the third time in five starts with the prior wins coming at the trainer's home base of Monmouth (New Jersey). The race was contested at one mile on the dirt and the track record is still held by Easy Goer from 1989.

  • Kendrick Carmouche is the early runaway leader in meet victories with 9.
  • Pablo Morales has 4 wins which is second among all riders. He last won at Aqueduct in 2014 prior to this meet. As I mentioned in a post earlier, he is a star at Tampa Bay. Good rider who may not get the mounts once the bigger names return and perhaps doesn't have the immediate connections in New York but he is skillful.
  • Todd Pletcher is having a strong presence with a 9 5-0-2 (56%/78%) record.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: Erawan (Tais Lyapustina/Jose Corrales) won at 23-to-1 which was the longest odds on the board. Street Ruckus (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) debuted to a fifth place finish. The streak is over! Brittany finished out of the money for the first time this meet and it took 16 starts.
  • Race 8: Tequila Fog (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) began a new streak for the trainer. A victory improved the jockey's mark to 65 19-6-9 (29%/52%). The trainer is 17 10-2-4 (59%/94%). The husband-wife team are striking as a team around 37% this meet.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Canceled: GPW canceled racing today due to weather-related concerns.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Continuation of the meet: The meet that was temporarily halted due to the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland picked up today.

The sales have been exhilarating today. Within the past few minutes Midnight Bisou was just bought for $5 million. One of the co-owners bought out the other partners. The mare will become a mommy. She was retired from racing earlier this year. Her racing record was 22 13-6-3 and she earned $7.4 million after being bought for $80,000 in 2017.

There it is $9.5 million on the starlet Monomoy Girl who won yesterday. She will not be retired, however. She will run in 2021.

Research shows this is the third highest price ever spent on a filly or mare at the November sale.
  • $14 million paid for Better Than Honour
  • $10 million price tag for Havre de Grace

The Irish conglomerate (Magnier and co.) just plopped $5.5 million on Rushing Fall who was retired after this weekend's Breeders' Cup . She won 11 of 15 starts under Chad Brown. The 5-year-old will now begin to breed.

If Paris Bikini goes for $2 million I will be shocked. Bobby Flay (chef) once owned her. 1-for-8 lifetime but she does have Bernardini in the blood.

Sold: Japanese interests for $1.95 million.

Ah, she was covered by Uncle Mo and as such will have an Uncle Mo baby. That explains it.

Damn. The bids are flying high.

She's A Julie was a tease. Let's see how much for her. If Paris Bikini gets $1.95 million, she could be more.

Already exceeded $2 million....on going.

Sold: $3,000,000!

Mother Mother goes for $1.8 million. She seemed to find ways not to win when she raced but that doesn't always tell the story in the next stage of life. Her career record on the track was 15 3-4-3.

Spendthrift Farm purchased Monomoy Girl, Mother Mother, She's A Julie and Got Stormy for roughly .... $17 million.

Larry Best was quiet. Not for long. The Boston businessman spent $1.3 million on One True Kiss who is in foal to Into Mischief, arguably the hottest sire going.

Spendthrift is on a mission. Positive Spirit, a daughter to Pioneerof the Nile, just bought for $1.5 million. She was a Grade 2 winner at Aqueduct. She did not finish in the Kentucky Oaks last year. She becomes the Farm's fifth major purchase today. Five of the top eight sellers to Spendthrift so far.

Bast (trained by Bob Baffert) is now on center stage ready to be purchased. She is 3-years-old and pregnant to Triple Crown winner Justify.

$4 million and counting...the boys are bidding.

SOLD: $4.2 million! I am not sure who bought her but she was antsy in the ring. Talkative horses send messages.

There was a little confusion as someone bid $4.3 million but it was either negated or misunderstood.

Now identified: Of course, Spendthrift bought another!

Spendthrift is on a mission. Bast becomes the Farm's sixth major purchase today. Six of the top ten sellers to Spendthrift so far.
