Extremely worthwhile initiative.

Perhaps breaking things down into categories - free online, pay for use online, microfilm(with source libraries), interest groups(-NHL,, Minors, junior, youth hockey, columnists, writers, content, etc would have long term benefit.

University of Manitoba has the Winnipeg Tribune online - earliest is 1890 and I think they are done up to 1969 right now (think the goal is to do all until the paper's ending in 1980). Sometimes takes a while to load up:

Kenora Public Library has 1890's to the 1950's of its papers online - no search function - just can look up by date:

The (looks like) entire archives of the Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Journal, Regina Leader Post, Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Victoria Times Colonist are available now on www.newspapers.com. And with a search engine that actually works. It's not free, but it's worth it.
