I just wrote something similar on a main board thread but I'll repeat it.

This team just needs to grow up and mature.

They need to be able to find their best game during the key moments of games and series. So far they have fallen flat on their faces. Playing quite honestly a scared game when the pressure hits a certain dial. They have to manufacture urgency, and can't bring it from puck drop. They're best game comes out of guilt for being down in games.. and even in seasons. Hence this ridiculous notion they are a back half team, which they've proven to be. Because they don't bring urgency until they're down.

1. They have a poor overtime record in the regular season.
2. It get's even worse come playoff time. Hell they've won 1 overtime game in the playoffs that I can recall and it was the pp that won it.
3. They've lost the first game of every playoff series they've been in since 2017.

This will be the hardest thing for them to change.

Showing up and playing your A game when the pressure is on.. that's hard.

How do you go into round 2 last year.. game 1 and lay a giant f***ing egg. How do you lay eggs in playoff games and expect to win series. Winners don't lay eggs.. they get beat by other teams playing their a game as well. This team beats themselves.

I'll know this team is ready to win when I don't have to jokingly say "The first one's free", because that's the Oilers playoff mentality. Here have the first game so we can find the urgency to bring our best game forth.

And man if this team ever figures that out... I think they could be great.

For me these first two games against Vancouver are a pretty good test of what you're describing. Vancouver is going to be a hungry, hungry team that is going to go all out to ensure they get off to a good start this year, and certainly not go 0-2.

If this team is prepared to take the next step and play a mature game right away rather than only when they are forced to, we will win the first two games. If not it is because our head isn't in the right place.......again.
