That's one hell of a story. I grew up in central Pasco as a kid and always said "If the countless lakes around here ever actually froze this little spot in the world or Tampa, in general, would've produced some hockey players a long time ago." But that was meant for like beer leaguers and maybe a couple of guys who made AHL careers and a brief call-up. It's crazy to think the Lightning had only been around about 16 years and if you went to the local rink you'd spot a 3 year old who would become a potential 1st round pick.

I never expected the area to produce someone that good that quickly. I figured some guy who'd be taken in the 5th round ya know? Hopefully, Sasha won't be the last.

That said we need to get some more rinks built up in here. You got a good start in Wesley Chapel and Clearwater. Get one in an area like Carrollwood and you'd really be cooking with gas. So many people around here are northern families that I'd say the odds of us producing a few more draftable players (at any round) within the next 10-15 years would be decent. I don't know about another Pastujov but that would be freaking sweet.
South Florida has the development lead right now in the state.

There is a rink somewhat near Carrollwood, but its not a full sized sheet. Between CWood and the airport, xtra ice.

Not surprising a lot of players have come out of that area, the area is a bit more affluent and financially stronger on average (guessing), plus its a common hotspot for northerners to move down. Manatee actually has been turning out some kids making it into the NCAA ranks lately, the high school program in the bay area has improved drastically. It helps when the team takes it over, hosts it, etc.

Samu Tuomaala has a 1st round grade from Central Scouting and is another guy that could be there for us to select as a late 1st rounder.

Another Samu that is highly rated is Samu Salminen. He is the younger brother of former Lightning 7th rounder Saku Salminen.

OHL officially announces it won't have a season this year, it looks like a lot of the kids went overseas to the Euro leagues but they're only able to get in 10-15 games because they were waiting around to see if the OHL was going to start or not.

Here are some players on Team Canada that are ranked in the 75-90 range in Bob's latest rankings. That is where we'll make our first selection in the 3rd round of the 2021 draft.

Guillaume Richard - 6'1" lefty dman that plays for Tri-City in the USHL. 16pts in 42 games this season. He's committed to play for the University of Maine next season. Bob has him ranked 75th.

Ryan Winterton - 6'2" forward for the Hamilton Bulldogs. 23pts in 53 games last season in his rookie OHL year. Hasn't played this season. Ranked 79th on Bob McKenzie's list

Olen Zellweger - 5'10" lefty dman that plays for Everett with Goncalves. Played mostly on the top pairing. Has 13pts in 11 games this season. Ranked 88th on Bob's list

Ethan Del Mastro - 6'4" lefty dman for Mississauga in the OHL. Hasn't played this season. Wears #77 for the Steelheads because of Victor Hedman. Rated as an honorable mention on Bob's list (97-100).

Jack Matier - 6'4" righty dman for the Ottawa 67s. Another OHL guy who didn't have a 2020-21 season. Rated as an honorable mention on Bob's list (97-100).

USA broadcast schedule
2021 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship

The Lightning have a game the same time as the gold medal game. By a transitive property, if we win on May 6th, we win the U-18 gold medal. That's just math.

USA only has 5 games on HockeyTV. I don't know their plans, but I wouldn't be surprised if they just made them free to bring potential new customers to the site.

The only guy from 75-90 on Bob's list that USA has is Justin Janicke. The shortcut is to look for NTDP guys on Bob's list as all but one USA player is from that.

Interesting team though. Ryan St. Louis, Sasha Pastujov (Bradenton), Ethan Strakay (Ormond Beach), and Jack Hughes all have strong Florida ties. Hughes's brothers were born in Orlando, and we basically talk about RSL like he's already one of our prospects.

I want Zellweger, just so I can always ask "Who the f*** is Reneé Zellweger?"

Sounding like Owen Power is gonna stay in Michigan another year. Wonder if that sways Buffalo towards Beniers, especially if they end up moving Eichel for a young Dmen

Final draft order is set:

3rd rd - 95th overall
5th rd - 159th overall
6th rd - 191st overall
7th rd - 195th overall (NJ)
7th rd - 210th overall (NSH)
7th rd - 223rd overall

  • Our 1st rd pick going to Columbus in the Savard deal will be the 31st overall selection. The 4th rd pick going to Detroit in this deal (#127) will also be the last pick of that round
  • Our 2nd rd pick going to Montreal will be the 63rd overall selection. We had swapped 2020 and 2021 2nd rd picks at the price of a 5th rd pick to grab Jack Finley, but Finley was selected 7 spots higher than the 2nd we're giving back to them.

The draft is in 2 weeks. Starts July 23rd.
