Rowing guys are often tall and fit. They're also often rich dicks. Dudes from normal middle class families in the burbs don't grow up rowing at the yacht club. They grow up playing little league and throwing rocks at bottles and finding dead bodies in the woods.
Where I grew up, only rich kids played hockey. There were only 2 ice rinks in the county, not to mention the equipment cost. Jeff Halpern is a rich MOD kid from Potomac (very pricey area) that went to Princeton. Lots of rich kids in the NHL, not many that have worked a phone kiosk.

Oddly, now that I think of it, there's only one rink in the county I live in now, though there's 17 right across the border.

Same for me, sadly. Hockey has only gotten more expensive over the years. My dad chose to pay for my icetime rather than buy a new car, so he took me to games in a banged up Ford Escort that could barely fit my bag and sticks. That's when I was in AAA. It was probably 6k a year in the late 1990s after buying new gear/sticks, training camps, travel expenses every season. I can only imagine how much more it costs in 2021.

If it makes you feel any better, I drive a 2001 Focus to work. I love my beater car. That gets all the miles while my other 5 cars sit. I have to use fuel stabilizer in the other cars...

Well with our current team barring injuries and OUR lotto luck any predictions on when we will be drafting ?

I want to say we will most likely be picking in the 6-8th range, thinking we end up being 6th worst and possibly move back with our lotto luck.
Buffalo
Seattle
Anaheim
San Jose
Arizona
Detroit
Columbus
Vancouver

I think Seattle will end up being better than a lot of people think. Their Defense and Goalies are pretty deep. Regardless I agree with you - gotta think we draft 6-9 range.

Are you really going to believe a model that doesn't have Buffalo dead last? Look at their goalies.
Certainly possible, but I realistically only see buff and Arizona finishing worse. I mean were we really that much better last year? Buffalo and jersey were surprisingly bad and the jackets just quit on their coach. Plus we will be in the best division, so a few loser pts to buff and maybe finish bottom 2.
NJ beefed up their roster, but I see the Wings finishing above BUF and SJ. Possibly LA and NASH, though both teams added a little in free agency. There's always a team or two that bombs for whatever reason too.

I had the Wings 9 +/-2 from bottom before free agency, I think I'm at 7th +/- 2 spots now.

So now that our top goalie prospect is letting in 9 goals a game against actual competition, who is the top goalie prospect for next year? Asking for a friend....:sarcasm:

Probable
Buff
Arizona
Ana
CBJ
SJ

Maybe
Nash
Ott
LA
Seattle (depends on how they gel)
NJ (if Bernie gets injured like he always does)

CBJ promoted their useless assistant. They won't be any better.

Wings will have Bert back, Vrana plays with more effort than Mantha, plus we have Pius, Ned, Leddy, and Mo. Legit NHL backups in case Dekeyser's back flares up. Maybe Fabbri stays healthy for once. No more Brome, lol.

The team was .500 pt% after the last week of Feb, that would put them around 10th from the bottom. Blash is going to low event hockey us to a bad draft slot by taking every game to OT for the loser point. The team might even win some OT games because Tanguay will probably insist on starting Vrana in OT instead of Blash's favorite Gagner.

I'm sticking to 7th +/- 2

Also, be careful how you edit quotes, if you put your reply in the middle, it becomes part of the quote.

I've already seen two Standings estimates for next season, and did also my own, and all these merged were that same: ~7th worst.

I think it's very near, but also there's room to be better, because no one can predict how big Seider impact will be. And if it will be big, it's only BIG positive.
I think his offense will take a while to develop at the NHL level, plus they'll probably ease him into PK duty. Expecting a solid season but not the game changer he was in Sweden.

No one really, the 2022 goalie crop is weak

Imo, there seems to be much more goalies ranked on early lists, than 2021. Those top ranked are just missing.

Eh...

Seattle is looking like the 1998 Nashville Predators. I am not a fan of how that team is built.

Columbus is another team we should do better than.
They lose Seth Jones and David Savard on defense. Added Jake Bean and Adam Boqvist? Those are definite downgrades.

They lost Cam Atkinson, a solid 2-way player that was always a threat shorthanded (he had 4 SHG last year) who also previously scored 41 and 35 goals for Jakub Voracek. Voracek has noticeably slowed down over the last couple of seasons, and has never been known as a two-way all-situations type of forward. This improves their powerplay but makes their PK worse, so it's kind of a wash.

And they got rid of Tortorella as coach and promoted one of his proteges. That's the wild card here, but I'm not seeing Columbus doing well. They're even thinner than Detroit at center and defense.

USA vs. Germany is live right now.

Sweden vs. Slovakia at the Hlinkas today! It goes live in 85 minutes. Watch to get a closeup look at some future Red Wings.

This Slovakian team is something else. Big fan of this Slafkovsky kid.

Here's a decent primer with some highlights for some of the kids that will be near the top of the draft.

It definitely makes me want to get 1 or 2 more 1st round picks.

Connor Geekie would be another center prospect that could be a great fit for us.

6'4" RH center that went almost a PPG last year in the WHL despite being only 16 for the entire season.

I think he is actually left-handed despite what elite prospects had him at. I know thay hockey prospects had him a left shot center in their 2022 early list and it is what I remember.

For those that were unhappy with Seattle picking his brother and leaving other guys on the table I thought that was the right call.

I am a big fan of both players.

If Connor can gain a step with his feet, he is going to be super dangerous.

I'm a fan, but not liking it either. It's gonna be low event hockey with mediocre players. Not very exciting.

I'll be changing my username soon to reflect my new home team....
