This is a bang on assessment.... the risk with York is in his own end can he play D with the lack of size he has. I thought yes but he still has to prove it and its no guarantee at all

There was a work out pic out pre season. He is jacked, and I believe a gym/rink rat. Look it up. Apparently whatever size he is he will get the most out of it, but that isn't even his defensive game. He does everything else extremely well. Position, stick, body position, denial anticipation are all considered excellent.

As with most guys on his career path he has also likely played against bigger players for at least the last few years. Its not new to him.

I think York is going to be the ultimate glue guy in a top 4. Low maintenance, well-rounded and can wear a number of hats (if they don't pigeon hole him as a PP specialist). I'm usually one to chase upside, but York's floor and general safeness as a prospect is what attracted him to me. He did everything well but nothing you would classify as "elite".

I think it's very unlikely he ever reaches franchise or foundational status. The raw tools and mentality just don't add up to one imo. He certainly has the reputation where he could end up on a PP1 and be a 50+ point guy, but I don't think I've ever watched him and thought, "Wow. Cam was dominant tonight" and I think you have to show some level of dominance at the lower levels if you have franchise defenseman potential. On the flip side I don't think I ever watched him play and thought he was terrible so that counts for something.

I think York is well above average in everything, but the one trait I think York possesses that might be considered elite is awareness and mental processing. He plays a very calm game and appears one step in front of the play at all time. He slows, calms the game down. As we have watched the Flyers his year I don't see how that ability isn't considered a critical trait the have for the defense.

Where did I say York was going to bad? Caufield was a great pick and has shown absolutely everything fans and analysts predicted before the draft. Lots of people on this board wanted him and they would've been right. Now if York becomes a Charlie Mcavoy Dman then it will be a good argument and I think will all be happy..... Right now though Caufield has been exceptional and looks like a hugh end talent in the most difficult environment you can imagine for someone who would be too small to handle NHL Dman.....he deserves credit and if you can't see that then go drink some more O&B Kool aid

That is some serious hyperbole.
He has 5 ES points in 12 PO games, that's a 34 point pace.
39 players have scored more in the PO so far.

Yes, he's fun to watch like all small, quick forwards, but he's a long way from being a "force" on offense.

I like York a lot. I don’t see him being a significant needle-move though due to his lack of consistent offensive aggressiveness. The lack of the killer instinct offensively will limit his NHL ceiling. However, he’s so well-rounded and consistent that I can forgive the lack of killer instinct. He rarely ever has bad periods or even bad games. Hopefully that translates to the NHL.

we can use Dmen who don't have bad games

He is very smart and that is part of his consistency as a player, but at the same time if it doesn't result in dominant performances because his mentality gets the best of him, I'm not going to double count his smarts. For example, quite often in the Big Ten he would be unpressured in the defensive zone and instead of buying time and finding an outlet for a controlled exit, he'd just chip it off the glass and out. What's going to happen in the NHL when the pace in infinitely higher? I don't have stats, but it always felt like Michigan never got an overwhelming amount of the shot share when he was on the ice. Mitch Brown also claims he was the worst transitional defenseman on Michigan in his sample (I don't buy that but it makes me think).

Now in his brief cameo in pro hockey, he did show a lot more creativity and aggressiveness offensively than he ever did at Michigan so there may be more offensive potential than he showed there, but for now I think you have to side with what he showed in larger samples.

I did my best to inject earnest discussion. Oh well.

So, which poster do you think I most identify with in terms of geographic location? I do love my Canes. Surrounded by Maguas?

I wondered how long it would take for another one to break and realizae that earnest discussion is reserved for PMs.

Welcome to the club. Whats your jacket size?

Ya, my post on Caufield wasn't to shit on York. Hopefully York becomes a Vlasic type steady Eddie.
However, having a top 10 prospect drop to us was almost as good as those magic lottery balls that got Patrick.

Seeing him play confirms that. I'll support York through and through but Caulfield was the guy I wanted.

It's way too early for judgments, we know Caufield will score, but will he be a DeBrincat sieve or a Gaudreau good enough defense not to negate his offense? Will York end up a smart but meh defenseman or a "quiet killer" who consistently breaks up offensive plays and moves the puck crisply up the ice? Will Brink be a step slow and a couple inches small or a Gourde type hustler who plays two way hockey and drives his line offensively.

Just like Frost I want our guys to succeed but some of you either don't watxh some of our kids or just don't want to admit their flaws. In the AHL games and World Junior games he did not show this strength your talking about (i've seen the pictures). He did show his calmness and ease with the puck, great vision. He did struggle a bit and was lost in his own end to a degree. I hope we don't rush him personally but maybe with the off season and some confidence now he's in the pro's will likely see some improvement. Defence is the hardest position for young players it usually takes years to master positioning etc. Hence look at Provy, Sanheim and Myers as evidence. If York can come in and be a solid 2 way dman in his rookie year would be a blessing but I have my doubts but lets hope for the best
