With all of the draft choices the Wings have had in recent offseasons it's probably going to become a serious issue for the organization. Prospects are going to watch the depth chart and realize they'd be best to take their chances elsewhere.

That's the thing... their G depth chart is pretty thin. A couple of old career 1Bs (one of whom is a UFA)...and a couple of guys who are playing over in Europe and are longshots.

He isn't doing this for a clearer path, because there aren't a lot of clearer paths. Doubt he's doing it to go home (same hometown as Bill Guerin) as the B's seem to have their goalie of the near future in Swayman. Not sure what he's looking for.

Good points. It points to a weird thing about rebuilds (Edmonton is another excellent example). For some reason rebuilding teams don't do well when it comes to collecting and drafting goalies during a rebuild. But that's another thread...

And it points out some of the negative side effects to the tear down kind of rebuild. Fans here love it because they see a year or 2 of pain but that a bright future with high end prospects... but that path fails as much as it succeeds and makes a destination unattractive to players who have some choice in where they'll play.

This team has had 10 or more picks in each of the last four drafts and has another 12 to come this summer. Anyone can do the math.

We should probably get used to seeing some of the drafted players become free agents.

Tear down rebuilds probably turn away more experienced players than prospects. Most experienced players who are at or near the prime of their career probably don't want to sign with a rebuilding team but prospects have the time and need the opportunities tear down teams offer. Another group of players who benefit from teardown teams are veterans looking for one or two year contracts so that they can stay in the league and earn a little money prior to retirement. But again, that's another thread...

This is a pretty big deal as Canes fans were a bit worried we could sign Drury. Definitely bumps up our prospect pool a notch to have Drury as a cemented prospect and not a question mark. I think Drury's floor is 4C and his ceiling is a 2nd line two-way center.
