I wasn’t expecting much of free agency. No one wants to sign with a team that is rebooting a rebuild. And Ullmark probably wanted that money and term because he knows UPL is gong to have the net soon.

Honestly, for a reboot, Adams and Karmanos are doing it right.
Don’t sign anyone who blocks the kids, don’t trade away assets to accelerate things, and be patient.

Yeah, I disagree here. Now, was the front office right not to go out and entangle themselves in long term deals? Absolutely. However, I think, on a limited basis, you should be spending assets to fill out the roster. I've detailed a lengthy shopping list that the team SHOULD have that they haven't even begun to touch. The only thing they have sort of addressed is a 4th line center with some mix of Caggiula and Hinostroza and a 2nd pairing LHD with Butcher (though, I think he's more of a bottom pairing PP specialist given his usage)

They should spend some (not a lot, mind you) assets or cap space to try to resolve the remaining roster issues. In goal is tough because that has already been bungled. You probably have to wait until closer to camp to see if someone breaks loose. Top pairing RHD? Probably not wise at these prices, though I wonder if you could resolve that via the Eichel trade. But a two way C, something we don't have any any level? Solve that via UFA or trade. Tierney from Ottawa is available. Bozak is a UFA. There are a few more options as well. They can add two top 9 forwards to this mix before camp without spending a significant amount asset wise and still be miles under the cap.

Adding short term players isn't blocking development, they are only increasing depth and giving them a short term hurdle to outwork in order to get premium ice time.

Simple answer: you’re assuming free agents would want to be in Buffalo right now. They don’t.

It does block development if you can't call up players from Rochester because the roster is full of slugs on 1 way contracts. That was a real problem under Botterill.

It's definitely a balancing act between having enough established players to insulate kids from roles they aren't ready for and not having so many that the kids can't grow into roles they are ready for. Botterill didn't get it right. Hopefully Adams can.

Yeah the issue with Botterill is he had an issue identifying players. He seemed to prioritize cost over fit. Beaulieau, Vesey, Sheary, Hunwick, Wilson were all ill fitted for the roster. The most glaring example of misallocation was spending 1st, 2nd, and 4th on Montour and Miller and not move Ristolainen, creating a log jam. I'm certainly not advocating that kind of over spend. Just find a pending UFA cap dump or vet with a little tread left on the tire to play a defensive center role and maybe find a salary dump RW.

I put the players in two groups top 9/top 5 vs bottom 7.

I don’t have an issue in signing 1 yr contracts on bottom 7 players. I don’t like doing that for top 9/top 5. If you have the prospect depth, let them compete for the spots.

it’s not gifting a player if they get a roster spot in a D+1 player drafted in the top 20.

So, unless the young Sabres surprise, Buffalo has a real good shot at one of Wright/Savoie/Lambert. Aside from what Adams gets for the Eichel return, that’s the 2022 1st, Cozens, Mittelstadt down the middle. That’s not bad.

Assume that both Drury and Adams compromise, and the trade is:

Kakko, Kravtsov, Schneider, Georgiev, 2022 1st

The eventual line up doesn’t look horrible

Center: 2022 1st, Mittelstadt, Cozens

Wings: Quinn, Kakko, Kravtsov, Asplund, Thompson, Peterka, Olofsson, Ruotsalainen, Skinner, Rosen, Poltapov, Kisakov

Defense: Dahlin, Power, Jokiharju, Schneider, Johnson, Samuelsson, Bryson, Laaksonen

Goal: Luukonen, Georgiev, Portillo, Levi

Add in this year’s picks, plus two additional 1sts and a 2nd in 2022... that’s a real good reboot. Just don’t hire Tim Murray or he’ll trade it all away.

Don't know much about Kravstov. Could you (or someone) give me a rundown of the type of player he is?

I'm no Kravtsov expert, but I think his game is a mix between Hossa's possession game on the wing and Kuznetsov's skill game. That's what I'd peg him at if he reached his potential.

I like it but at this point there’s no chance Eichel is getting all of that in return. Brace yourself.

I wouldn't make that trade regardless due to my unwillingness to trade Eichel to the Rangers.

I also don't really know diddly about him, but I have to say, his stats don't scream "great prospect" or even "good prospect". Kind of feels like Kotkaniemi in that his current team's fans are overvaluing him solely because they overdrafted him.

Kravstov is a 2nd line winger in a best case scenario. He’s never put up big offensive numbers above juniors. His time in the KHL and his 39 games in the AHL did not show a ton of offensive production.

The Rangers offers continue to be four or five nickels for a dollar.

Kakko, Schneider, and Lundqvist are the only potential guys coming back that interest me. And Drury may not put more than one of them in an offer.

Do Schneider and Lundkvist have the same value as Kakko?

Kravtsov certainly cannot be the main part of the deal, only if it is additional.

Kakko
Schneider/Lundkvist
Georgiev
1st

We will get a potential first line winger, a potential top 4 RDs and a not bad goalie.

2022 draft: Wright/Lambert/Savoie to complete the center depth.

Kakko is more of a suspect to me as he has had a slightly better start to his North American pro career than Puljujarvi did.

Kakko’s possession numbers have been good. But, the production hasn’t been there and he has had heavy OZ starts.

I don’t know that I would count on Kakko being a legit first line winger.

I think he still has the potential for this, the guy has all the tools, maybe there was a problem in the coach? It seems Laf didn't do well under Quinn either.

If Kakko had been a second round pick, I don’t know if people would look at him as a potential first line winger after the past two seasons.

He might be able to be that kind of a player in the right situation. I just wouldn’t expect it.

Well, he is not very effective in target yet, but it seems his metrics looked good. As I said, the guy has all the tools and for me he does not yet look like the second PoolParty. I’m just wondering how he could prove himself at Granato playing in the top 6, it seems Quinn did not trust the youth too much and preferred veterans in all important situations, as Krueger did with us. Moreover, you know very well that the development of players is not linear.

Getting Kravstov in a trade feels like getting Lias Andersson in a trade a couple years after his draft year.

Oh, here's your high-draft picked center prospect!

Here's a question. Who leads the Sabres in goals next year and how many?

A) Mittelstadt
B) Skinner
C) Olofsson
D) Cozens
E) Thompson
F) Not on the roster yet

I'm going with Olofsson. 21 goals.

Mittelstadt with 19.

Skinner will be 2nd with 14. I think VO gets traded at some point, I’d say he gets 9 goals on Buffalo.

It's gonna be a long ass year.
