Behind you, look out
This is the plan. So lets see where we need the most help.

Centre:
White
Brown
Batherson (RW/C)
Norris
Chlapik

LW:
Tkachuk
Balcers (RW/LW)
Formenton

RW:
Ryan (hes under contract till then)
Beaudin

(Defense are positioned based on shot hand)

LD:
Chabot
Harpur
Lajoie
Wolanin
Englund

RD:
Jaros
Bernard-Docker

Goalies:
Hogberg
Gustavsson
Daccord
Mandolese

So from this, my view is that when trading Duchene, Stone, Dzingel some high end prospects to fill the RD spot (mostly to pair with Chabot) and some solid RWers (even if Batherson can switch to wing) are the top priorities.

Thoughts?

Management probably just assumes we'll have Alexis Lafreniere by that point.

I think Batherson is strictly a RW at the NHL level. I also think it's safe to assume one of Tierney/Pageau will still be around as well. Also not sure I'd even mention Englund, as it's looking more and more likely he's AHL fodder. Also, maybe Demelo is still around (but in a reduced role).

RW and RD (especially) are the two big holes, but I also think we need to continue to evaluate LD. I'm not convinced we can just slot Wolanin and Lajoie in there for the next decade because they are both limited players.

Tkachuk - Lafreniere? - xxxx
Balcers - Brown - Batherson
Formenton - White - Norris
Chlapik - Tierney - Ryan

Chabot - Jaros
Lajoie - Demelo
Wolanin - JBD
Harpur/Boro

Gustavsson
Hogberg

Tough to project this far out obviously. I'm not sure how this team leads us to "5 years of unparalleled success" but I'll leave that up to the experts.

Yes that’s who I’ve been searching for in trade returns. RW(mostly) and RD
I still hope to see Paul at LW. Batherson will likely be at RW. Pageau could(likely?)still be around so Chlapik moves to wing.
And finally I’d like to see tkachuk-Norris somehow.(best buddies after all)
Of course players will be moved out and players will be moved in. But I like this exercise to see where we’re at now then find the weaknesses. (I tried this same type of thread a couple years ago)

Paul-Brown-Batherson(Ahl fire line)
Tkachuk-Norris-Stone(I’m going to hope for now)
Formenton-White-Ryan
Balcers-Pageau-Chlapik

Chabot-Demelo
Wolanin-Bernard Docker
Lajoie-Jaros
Tychonik
Harpur
Englund

Hogberg
Gustavsson

Balcers swap with Paul could work

I think we should target RD prospects at the deadline. If we can get a dominant top 4, that will be huge. And then use the 1sts we get on forwards. Mostly because forwards typically progress faster than defence.

Think about Nashville, their top 2 C's are good but nothing to write home about. A few really good wingers but after that, their roster up front isn't amazing. Yet they're still contending consistently. Because the back end is phenomenal. Let's start there, and then in the 2019/2020 drafts we can build on our already fairly-loaded forward group.

We need more than just high draft picks, for a proper rebuild we will need to make use of every way to get players...Trades ,select UFA signings etc etc...Also adding some high level people into coaching and management is a must....

EM saying "rebuild "doesnt carry any weight if he is just going to half ass it as per the usual....

I'd like to see them target the defence and center. Centers can quite often play wing, and our center depth is really riding on Brown, so some prospect insurance there is ideal.

On defence targeting the right side is the most pressing need, but some insurance on the left is also ideal. Chabot, Wolanin & Lajoie are the only potential long term pieces right now.

Beyond those specifics, we badly need high end players wherever we can find them.

Trade Duchene/Dzingel/Stone/Ceci for picks and prospects, but try to nab Tolvanen from Nashville.
Draft a number 1 center with our 2020 pick, and a good defenseman with the Sharks' 2020 pick.
Draft another high-end forward with our 2021 pick.
Get a goalie via draft or trade.

Our 2022 lineup:
Tkachuk-2020 center-2021 forward
Tolvanen-Brown-Batherson
Norris-White-Balcers
Formenton-Paul-Chlapik

Chabot-2020 Defenseman
Lajoie-Bernard-Docker
Wolanin-Jaros

This lineup could use some Quinton Byfield. He and Tkachuk would be a force.

Man, Winnipeg now is what Ottawa could be next year if not better, especially having a bottom 6 full of skill and young. Can't help but picture this lineup:

Tkachuk-White-Stone
Dzingel-Duchene-Batherson/Simmonds/UFA
Balcers-Chlapik-Batherson/Simmonds/UFA
Paul-Pageau-Paajarvi

Chabot-Karlsson
Lajoie-UFA
Jaros-Wolanin
