I'm betting that at least one of the players we consider a "lock" to go in the top 10 will fall outside of it. It seems to happen every year.

Benefited Minnesota; Boldy was a top 10 pick that dropped down to 12. Cozen and Zegras both dropped. Cole Caufield and Newhook dropped along with Krebs.

Top 9 usually isn’t as well defined as it is this year. No one really expected the guy that dropped to be Boldy, but there was a bunch of speculation that guys like Podkolzin and Caufield could go anywhere from 6 to 16.

I’m not saying it won’t happen this year, but I can’t think of who drops.

All it takes if for just one team in the top 9 to go off the reservation.

Yeah I get that, I just think if you’re comparing to previous drafts, taking Seider over Podkolzin isn’t as off the reservation as taking Sanderson over Holtz is.

Again, not saying it can’t happen, but this is slightly different than most previous drafts in that sense.

2018 there was a pretty strong consensus for the top 10, right? Hayton and Kravtsov weren't supposed to be taken that high and were considered big reaches by the majority.

There are risers and fallers every year and I'm not sure if this year is going to be any different, as the consensus amongst the teams never seems as strong as media/fans makes it to be.

Some teams might prefer Sanderson over Drysdale, or Zary over Lundell, or Quinn over Holtz/Perfetti, or who knows what really.

I think all of the top 9 will be gone by 12. Every year A few teams reach for their guy.

Um, yeah that's how it works. His cap hit is 9.5m while the actual cash he receives is about 11m in total. The way it's paid out between his actual salary and the signing bonus is why it looks funny.

Maybe I need @Jesus Brodin to do the math for me, but if he makes an average of 9.5M per year, and has a 3M base salary, and a 9M signing bonus, where does the 11M come from?

Why 11? Doesn't he make 9.5?
His salary this year is actually $12m. His cap hit is $9.5m.

He has a 8yr $76m contract (which includes a $48m signing bonus). That's where the $9.5m/yr cap hit comes from.

The base salary THIS season is $3m, his signing bonus THIS season is $9m. Thus a $12m salary, but only a $9.5m cap hit.

Next season his base salary is $1m, his signing bonus is $7m - making his total real dollars salary of $8m, with a cap hit of $9.5m.

The cap hit is the same the life of the contract, the salary varies from year to year in both base salary and signing bonus.

The season after next, he jumps back to a $12m real salary because his base jumps up to $7m, while his signing bonus is $5m.

Here's the entire year by year breakdown.

His “average yearly cash,” as you said it, is 9.5 million. That’s what an AAV is.

AAV = Cap hit. He was just pointing out real dollars vs cap dollars and made the comment that he wasn't $11m elite... which I agree with. The only number that should concern fans though is the cap hit or AAV. By that number, he isn't expected to be $11m elite... only $9.5m. ;)

He said his yearly average cash is 11 million dollars. It’s 9.5 million. AAV means annual average value. Some years you make more, some years you make less, depending on how the contract is structured. But the AVERAGE is still 9.5 million.

I didn't see him say yearly average anything.

Here he says what his salary is... makes no mention of yearly avg. Cash vs cap is rarely if ever identical... but the actual cash number changes from one year to the next... both higher and lower. Right now it's an up swing at $12m cash... next year it's a down swing at $8m cash. The avg or AAV over the life of the contract is always what the cap hit is.

Lapierre is supposed to be a top 10 talent, but has had concussion issues. Risky.

I can see Askarov dropping quite a bit unless he finishes the year really strongly. I will be surprised if he is picked as high as Knight.

Pass on Lapierre for me, way too much concern with his concussion history. I’d use a third on him, but nothing more.

Eh...bracing myself for Zary. I like Schneider, a lot, as a later pick, but we are all of a sudden full up with RHD. Trouble is, they are all smurfs. Having a big strong guy back on D, or at least a guy with a long reach, is useful.

Would sure like to know if Mennell can play NHL as a 3rd pairing PP specialist. If he can, then either Addison or Dumba can be used as trade bait, the latter not till next year when he(hopefully) kicks it back into gear. Addison should be tempting for a similarly ranked C prospect? After the WJC he had he must have opened up some eyes.

We gon’ get Lundell. Calling it right now. I’ll be happy with him.

Yes please.

Question is, who?
