Sure would be nice to see the last pics of the puzzle to this off-season before another workweek is wasted refreshing Twitter.

Guess we're going to see a big trade announced just prior to a Pietrangelo contract being announced.

Hope a team like Florida can step in an hijack the Schmidt-to-Winnipeg trade, to free up Weegar for us...
Just outbid Winnipeg for Schmidt.

Yes, yes, they can't.

Still need a #3C and top 4D.

The offense is stacked so they can get by without a proper #3C. However, we definitely need a solid defenseman who ideally pushes Graves to the 3rd pairing.

That cuts both ways. Do you really think our 3rd line was worth the money this past season? If the 3rd line isn’t productive, what’s the point of paying an inflated veterans salary?

Keep in mind, some of our best players are coming up for richly deserved new contracts with salary increases. To accommodate this, we can keep over paying underperforming 3rd line vets.

It’s also possible that there’s a point of diminishing return when it comes to “marinating” in the AHL. There’s a fine line between “marinating and languishing. And what if the AHL isn’t a good situation to grow their game and learn?

It can’t be a joke but there’s no reason to not carve out a role for one or two prospects a year. It keeps costs down and incentivizes young players to stay hungry. No need to reward unproductive vets.

Who is languishing in the minors?? Timmins? Last year was his FIRST year in the AHL. Bowers? Same as Timmins.

Martin Kaut? That was his 2nd year - he only played 34 games and was pointless to start his season in his first what 16 games?? He recovered well but another year in the AHL certainly won't hurt him.

For the record - I'm not suggesting bringing in crappy vets for a high salary and a bunch of term. I'm talking about and have been talking about bringing guys like Kyle Clifford who just signed for 2 years @ $1M per in St-Louis. I'm specifically talking about bringing in that type of player in a 4th line role.

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about suggesting GMs should put everything on hold to offer sheet Tampa players. It seems obvious those are the players they’re determined to keep. So it’s more likely they want to move a couple of contracts.

With that in mind, they won’t be the only teams trying to shed payroll. But the question is, what are they expecting in return and what kind of leverage do they have? For example, will Tampa get a kings ransom for Stamkos or will it require a sweetener?

And then there’s the domino effect. A team wants to trade for Stamkos (just for example) but they need to carve out a little room. So maybe they’re willing to move a contract that’s fair and reasonable? If Joe leaves some cap room, the Avs could possibly take advantage of this scenario.

Stamkos isn't going on LTIR and he's not getting moved as is the case with the majority of TB's players. Their management gave them those clauses and now that team won the cup, the players love it there and don't want to move so they are stuck. They have about $3M in case space to re-sign Cernak, Cirelli AND Sergachev. Out of all their players, the only guy who has a big contract and CAN be moved is Killorn ($4.5M - has a 16 team no trade list).

The biggest issue with offersheets is that you have to wait 7 days to find out if the other team matches or not (because they surely would use the full 7 days to do so). And in the meantime you risk missing out on other targets.

Let's say that we OS Cernak for example. Tampa take their time, and a week from now they match. In the meantime, Vancouver signs Vatanen, Martinez gets traded somewhere, and other GM's solidify their rosters to the point that they won't want to move a top 4 Dman anymore. Then the buyer-friendly market suddenly becomes less of a buyers market as the options have become rather limited.

An OS also typically forces you to overpay on a contract rather than getting the player at market value. So it often works out better to try to work out a trade than submitting an OS.

That's why an offer-sheet for a #3D-#4D like Cernak isn't the way to go. If Sakic is to offer-sheet anyone, he should go after Sergachev - make it super expensive so that it's very difficult for the Lightning to match and make it a 3 year deal so that if fits with our window. (he'd still be an RFA after that)

I just don't think that's Joe's style. Personally, I believe that Sakic is working with Brisebois and they are trying to hammer out a deal.
