MONTREAL, QC - The Buffalo Sabres announced today that they have acquired forward Nino Niederreiter from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Zemgus Girgensons, defenseman Miska Kukkonen, and a 6th round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

Niederreiter (6' 2", 218 lbs, 9/8/1992) joins the Sabres after spending parts of the last two seasons with Carolina, putting up 66 points in 118 games. Prior to being traded to Carolina, Niederreiter played 498 games for the Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders, amassing 231 points over that span. The Chur, Switzerland native was drafted 5th overall by the Islanders in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Girgensons had been with the Sabres organization since being drafted in 2012, playing in 502 games over that time. He was a pending Restricted Free Agent.

Kukkonen spent the past season playing for Lukko in the Finnish Elite League.

"We are excited to add Nino to our forward group," the Sabres GM said. "We feel he can excel in our middle-6 and can be a real asset for us as we head into 2020-21. We wish Zemgus and Miska all the best in Carolina."

The 2020 NHL Entry Draft begins Friday from the Bell Centre in Montreal.
