There was no other option this round through, really.

Spezza has been more valuable than Boyd, and otherwise you're exposing a guy like Engvall or Mikheyev, which makes no sense
You are entirely right, but the end result is a function of Dubas' decision not to have wiggle space under the cap.

Most of the teams that believe that they are contenders are up against the cap Besides, The Leafs are looking to add at the deadline.

Hey,
For as much hate as Leafs fans get thinking every other team wants our spare parts, the Leafs have the most waiver claims against in the League in the past three years, with seven guys! The next closest team is Winnipeg with 5, and that's counting Comrie being claimed from them twice.

When the Leafs strap themselves so close to the cap where they can only run a 20/21 player roster to be cap compliant it's not shocking the 21st/22nd players get claimed while other teams with full rosters have their 23rd/24th players clearing waivers.

The Isles are knee deep in LTIR. Doesn't make any cap difference how often they bounce players between the roster and taxi squad.

Islanders have hardly used Ross Johnston since the beginning of the season but they keep him ont he 23-man roster. I think they fear if they send him to the taxi squad somebody will pick him up. In the case of Komorav, his contract sort of makes it unlikely anybody will pick him up

Finally without LTIR, we can begin accruing cap space (which also led to Boyd being waived)

It won't be a whole lot at this point, but better than zero, but we'd still likely need to move a contract.
If the Leafs want to fit a bigger ticket or a player that isn't a rental, for sure. It is the reason why Kerfoot is in so many proposals.

Wolanin isnt a favourite of DJ Smith. He also has not looked good at all this season. He's got potential though and if I'm a team that needs an offensive minded dman I'd put in a claim. Don't expect much at all defensively though. Bit of a trainwreck in the DZone.

Wolanin clearing waivers was the most obvious thing ever. A 26 year old "prospect" that hasn't looked good this year, benched by a team that allows the most goals in the NHL, a team with only 4 NHL defensemen (4 1/2 if you count Brannstrom who at least has potential and is dynamic). Wolanin is neither dynamic nor safe. I can't believe people thought he'd be claimed. Then again every team has fans that think every prospect they have is going to be a good NHLer. He won't be on the Sens next year, he'll be on another team's AHL team.
